The Monocoupe 90A CNC router cut kit is based on an exclusive Phillip Kent design, produced specifically for Apache
Aviation to kit.
The Monocoupe is one of the all time classic light aircraft. The first Monocoupe was designed and built in 1927 by Clayton Folkerts, an Iowa farmer, who later won fame as a racing
aircraft designer. Original manufacture was by the Velie company. Production was later moved to Lambert Field, St. Louis. This is where the 90A, with a Lambert five cylinder radial, was built. Manufacture
moved to Florida, where production continued until the late 1940s, with a variety of models and engines. The Monocoupe was always known for its exceptional performance compared to other light aircraft of similar
power. For this reason, it is reputed that Mr. Mulligan, the racing aircraft, was patterned after the Monocoupe.
The completed model photos show our Apache Aviation prototype, powered by an OS52FS. Phillip’s prototype was
powered by a Laser 70. There are over 240 CNC router cut parts. The kit is very complete and only requires glue and covering material to complete the airframe build. It has been achieved by melding Phillip Kent
Design’s scale fidelity and Apache Aviation’s exacting kit engineering and simplicity of build. The Monocoupe 90A could be a particularly difficult scratch building project. In particular, the cabin
section floor, formers and roof are all at different angles relative to each other. Extensive use of a tab and slot self jigging design has eliminated this difficulty and turned the construction into more of an
assembly process, which is explained in a step by step check the box building manual. This is an aeromodelling project that the average builder can take on with confidence. The result is an impressive, all wood
classic aircraft that will create a sense of achievement and pride down at the flying field. When fully detailed, it is also good enough to win in competition.
The optional NC16427 Decal Set includes
‘The Monocoupe’ script logo, all fin numbers and lettering, fuselage graphics and wing registration numbers.
