About this deal

In a conspiracy that stretches from Cambridge to Berlin, and from the US to Ireland, can he discover the truth before it's too late?

The scenes from Baldwin’s perspective were particularly good (although I could have done without the ‘mysterious shadowy cabal’ scenes, which felt derivative and heavy handed) and the links to the Civil War with their proxy elements neatly dovetail in with the plot. The taverna is the only place that Kostas and Defne can meet in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic and chilli peppers, creeping honeysuckle, and in the centre, growing through a cavity in the roof, a fig tree. When a friend of Lydia’s dies in mysterious circumstances, Wilde is drawn into trying to help her find out what has happened – and a real twisty, turny, wheels within wheels, where does anyone’s real allegiance lie tale begins to play out. I love the idea of espionage, intrigue and murder and the main character Thomas sounds very interesting. When several members of the ring soon turn up dead, Billy abruptly pulls Kate out, blowing her cover.

This is her first ‘assignment’, she is out of her depth and justifiably scared – and in a very short time she lies dead of an apparent heroin overdose in a Cambridge bedroom. Her schoolfriend Nancy has suddenly died, apparently of a heroin overdose, and then the parents of another friend have been found butchered in their home. Perhaps most worryingly of all, in Germany Otto Hahn has produced man-made fission and an atomic device is now possible. He won the CWA Ellis Peters Historical Award for his second novel, Revenger, and a TV series of the John Shakespeare novels is currently in development.

There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. When a renowned member of the county set and his wife are found horribly murdered, a maverick history professor finds himself dragged into a world of espionage which, until now, he has only read about in books. There he finds a trio of friends distanced over time and their prominent families, two of whom have been tainted by sudden deaths. His new character Professor Wilde, a scholar specialized in Tudor England himself nicely fills the gap left by the Bard’s brother in Clements’ former saga.

The story moves on, through assassinations, attempted rape, blackmail, the transportation of stolen bullion and devious political conspiracies . They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together.

To be honest unless the publisher had offered me this copy to review I wouldn’t have known it existed – I’m so grateful to them for drawing my attention to it. I found myself musing over motives and hidden agendas, and trying to decide whether I should have liked or feared the enigmatic yet potentially dangerous Philip Eaton, for his role was (deliberately) never quite clear. A resolve to be a giant among men, to conquer, plunder and seize the greatness that he thinks is his right.
