About this deal

To start this review, I have to say that I, personally, enjoy reading detectives at summer. The thing is, I feel that vacation read requires to be both thrilling and not emotionally heavy. And “Maigret And The Tall Woman” turned out to be just the book of that kind – so I’m very thankful to Penguin Books for sending it to me. It's been many years since I last read a Maigret novel, but the recent Penguin re-issues in new translations piqued my interest in re-visiting him. This is the 38th in the series, so the character is well-established, and Simenon doesn't spend much time in this one filling in details of his personal life. It works perfectly as a standalone, as I believe most, if not all, of them do. Maigret in New York, Inspector Maigret in New York's Underworld, Maigret in New York's Underworld ('47) PLOT Inspector Cadaver appeared as Maigret's Rival in a Penguin triple edition of 1985 along with The Night Club and Maigret in New York. This is the original translation by Helen Thomson, with an introduction by Paul Bailey. The title role in the 1960s British Maigret TV series was played by the actor Rupert Davies, who made his debut on 31 October 1960. Davies took over the part after Basil Sydney, who appeared as Maigret in the original transmitted pilot, proved unavailable owing to ill-health. Davies went on to star in 52 adaptations for BBC TV in that decade. His portrayal won two of the highest accolades: his versions were dubbed into French and played across the Channel; and Simenon himself said of Davies "At last, I have found the perfect Maigret!" [23] The theme tune to the TV series, "Midnight in Montmartre", was composed by Ron Grainer. [24] Kees Brusse and Jan Teulings also portrayed the character in separate Dutch adaptations produced around the same time.

Recurring characters in the series include Maigret's wife Louise (usually referred to simply as Madame Maigret) [7] and in particular "The Faithful Four", a group consisting of his four loyal police colleagues (Sgt./Inspector Lucas, Janvier, Lapointe, and Torrence [7]). A visit from the tall, thin woman he arrested many years ago - now married to a hapless burglar - leads Maigret on a tortuous investigation in which he struggles with a formidable suspect. A good place to dip your first toe into a Maigret story or refresh one's own memories from radio, TV or older versions of books that never seem to go out of circulation. Simenon also wrote a large number of "psychological novels", such as La neige était sale (1948) or Le fils (1957), as well as several autobiographical works, in particular Je me souviens (1945), Pedigree (1948), Mémoires intimes (1981). He is best known, however, for his 75 novels and 28 short stories featuring Commissaire Maigret. The first novel in the series, Pietr-le-Letton, appeared in 1931; the last one, Maigret et M. Charles, was published in 1972. The Maigret novels were translated into all major languages and several of them were turned into films and radio plays. Two television series (1960-63 and 1992-93) have been made in Great Britain. The series was written by a set of ten writers, each contributing individual episodes; the most prolific being Giles Cooper, credited with nineteen episodes, and Roger East, with twelve. [2]

His investigations lead him to a dentist Guillaume Serre (Christopher Benjamin.) A cool customer whose wife is missing, supposedly she has gone to Amsterdam, the country of her birth. The dentist is a skinflint and has repaired his own window twice. His wife's correspondence reveals that her elderly mother in law is domineering leading to a poisoned relationship between the three of them in the household. Maigret began working as a police officer in Paris in his twenties. At the age of 30 he entered the Homicide Squad and later, nearing his forties, became chief inspector of the squad. It is mentioned that Maigret retired when in his mid-fifties, which gave him over 30 years of experience in the police. [10]

In May 2021, Network Distributing announced the Blu-Ray release of the series (to be released August 2021), with a DVD release soon to follow. [12] Gerard Depardieu starred as Maigret in a 2022 French film, entitled Maigret, adapted from Maigret and the Dead Girl. [18] Television [ edit ] This is classic Maigret and though it's midway through the series, it's also perfectly fine as a place to start for those new to Simenon. This new Penguin translation feels smooth and natural, and keeps some of the low-key humour of the originals. In 2021, the Simenon estate signed a co-production and licensing deal with Playground Entertainment and Red Arrow Studios to produce a new English-language series, with the option extending to the entire Maigret canon.
