About this deal

The plot twists and hidden themes/secrets are clear within the story, and I love the message of new beginnings and finding your place within your environment. This resources will encourage and support pupils to explore unknown vocabulary, classify tiered vocabulary independently, explore the wider application of newly acquired vocabulary and enhance classroom vocabulary display which ultimately leads to improved retention. Looking around me, I could see that living in a city could be incredibly isolating for many people at certain periods of their life although I think this could be said for anywhere, where different issues would crop up. Every single character in this book, good or bad or in between, is superbly written and I loved Leelu and her brother Tiber, who also faces some issues when arriving in England, especially.

Polly Ho-Yen is just amazing at creating characters who wriggle their way into your heart and under your skin, making you care about their relationships and what will happen to them.Obviously he ultimately turned out to be fine but I would have preferred if maybe her mum had met him first and he had become established as a trusted adult before Leelu went into his house. I’m always fascinated by those books that have this kind of draw over me because there are some books that I would not be fussed to reread and then others where I can’t wait to turn back to the start.

Her first novel, Boy in the Tower, published in July 2014 by Random House Children's Publishers, was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and shortlisted for the Blue Peter Book Award and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize. I have a feeling my copy of Fly Me Home may become just as treasured as Boy in the Tower in years to come. We chose this book for a Literary Leaf as it is a beautiful book which introduces the power of symbols to the children. By providing a contextual explanation rather than just a standard definition, we can better help children understand the stories we are sharing with them and widen their vocabulary. Join our community to get personalised book suggestions, extracts straight to your inbox, 10% off RRPs, and to change children’s lives.I particularly liked certain scenes - Leelu's first day at school for example, a scene that will hit home with any young person whose experienced a new school. There were moments when I was very invested in the storyline but other times when I didn't feel like there was much to it. This is a 15-session Literary Leaf for Fly Me Home by Polly Ho-Yen which covers all aspects of the content domains for Upper Key Stage 2. Maybe that's me looking at it's from too much of an adult perspective but I would not want my child thinking it's okay to go off with random adults!
