About this deal

I don’t buy this nostalgic thing of the good old days when it was all social housing,” says Bloxham. “To make a place work you need to bring multi-tenure, you need to bring mixed uses, you need to bring change.” CARY, BILL (22 April 2019). "Penthouse Apartment in a Gothic-Style House Rich With English History". www.mansionglobal.com . Retrieved 13 July 2022. Urban Splash insists that every former council tenant was offered the right to return to Park Hill, but, given that they had been rehoused elsewhere for a decade, few took up the offer. Rules in the tenancy agreement forbidding the homes’ newly raw concrete walls to be painted also put some tenants off, banned from recreating their cosy nests of magnolia and Anaglypta.

The restoration programme in 2005 was in keeping with the spirit of the original Victorian design, whilst rejuvenating the plant collections and adapting the Gardens for modern-day needs. A full description of the planting in the National Trust garden, including replacement planting after severe storm damage in 1987, may be found in the current guidebook. In 2005, education programmes undertaken by schools on the estate, were presented to the House of Commons, Education and Skills Committee, by the organisation Education Outside the Classroom. [12] On film [ edit ] Sheffield Park and Garden - house in private ownership The story of what happened next is well told, if not always accurately. The collapse of the Sheffield steel industry in the 1980s, aided by Margaret Thatcher’s onslaught, saw mass unemployment, with many dumped in Park Hill with no choice in the matter. What had been a source of intense municipal pride became branded a sink estate, the elevated streets synonymous with muggings, drug addicts and an easy getaway for burglars. People saw it as a no-go area, a place of no hope. But that’s not how Marsden remembers it. Often regarded as Brown's successor, there is a surviving sketch by Humphry Repton of the park, however Repton's letters record that he did not formally deliver suggestions in one his 'Red Books. [1] Nevertheless, according to Edward Hyams, Repton undertook work in the park in 1789. [4]

The estate is first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is listed as part of the 'rape of Pevensey', an area given by William the Conqueror to his half-brother, Robert, Count of Mortain. In August 1538, Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, entertained King Henry VIII here. [1] Lower Woman's Way Pond

The gardens originally formed part of the estate of the adjacent Sheffield Park House, a gothic country house, which has remained in private ownership since the 1953 sale of the estate.
