Some chapters were really hard to read but Kenji and Nazeera's sweet and angry moments made it easy to read this book. Juliette and Warner both had great character arcs and development in this book, and they’re just as adorable as always. It just makes me think that maybe they knew all along, and that kinda makes me sad bc for soooo long, once again, I thought they didn’t know and it would’ve been funny if they found out. As a result of their conversations, he knows what the opening of the doors to his cell mean, and he does his best to take the quick shower.

I know books in series should stop and give you an idea of the previous books, but still, the number of times that characters stopped and asked such clunky rhetorical questions and had paragraphs-long recaps of stuff we already know just became disappointing. I’ve been loving these books for almost seven years and I can’t make that change overnight, even though I’m trying to be more willing to see them as Ella and Aaron. Then he goes on his own arc of redemption, and usually I hate it when men are redeemed because they’ve met someone, but he didn’t initially want to redeem himself because he liked Juliette/Ella; but because she gave him hope. Second, why all the drama and pages about this stupid marriage where Kenji convinces Warner to wait, and then Warner asks her later the same? This time around my emotions at the end of “Defy Me” weren’t as intense as they were after reading its predecessor but I think that’s mostly due to the nature of the ending.

LOL* So yes, my boy might be tortured and broken but he’s mending and I absolutely love the person he’s becoming. That’s the backstory I care about, not about their five year old selves having dinner together or whatever.
