About this deal

Some of these alternative containers can work out a good deal cheaper for their contents than those found in lindal valved canisters. What’s the best kind of stove to use there (we’ll be riding down the west coast route north to south)?

It’s possible that this question has already been answered but if it has I can’t find the question or response. Having given two talks on camping stoves at recent festivals, one of the key things I realised was that not everyone knows about the different types of gas canisters available for camping stoves. That stove has a pre-heat tube (not all remote stoves do) so can be used with either a gas or liquid feed. These taller butane canisters are narrow and unstable if they are used with a canister top stove rather than a remote stove. However, I’ve recently looked into a more base-camp type stove, and have landed on the Camp Chef Everest.g. stove model, windshield, heat reflector, heat exchangers on the pots) is a much bigger factor than the canister type. If it burns better after you’ve done those things, even if only briefly, then it’s probably the cold.

However, if you’re travelling through different countries or out in the middle of nowhere, you can’t always find screw-on gas canisters. From the amount of comments on this article though, it seems as if there might be a market for them! I’ve not used that stove or those canisters, but when I look up the Campingaz 400, it says it’s compatiable with the Campingaz R907 canister. This product is not sold in Europe (certainly not Norway, where I live), and thus is fitted for the 16. Even fewer knew that there are several dual fuel stoves and handy little adaptors you can get for your camping stove that will allow it to use any type of gas.If so, your best bet will be a stove that burns petrol instead, because you can get that every time you fill up your bike. They are an old and very simple design that just isn’t compatible with the more modern (and safer) alternatives. Probably a different stoichiometric ratio or something about the porous radiant burner design, but it doesn’t like pure butane at all. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item.

So a stove that used the camping gas method to attach to either kind of can woukd be superior due no brass threads to wear out and flexibility. Update: I asked on Twitter and was told that ‘aerosol’ canisters are the most readily available in Cambodia. Alternative adapters for these bottles are quite easily located as they are sold for those brazing and soldering with propane. I didn’t realize there would be an issue until after I received the setup, so I’ve spent an ungodly amount of time figuring out how to get around this situation.

A cap must be used to protect the fittings on the bayonet type canister as these will leak gas if depressed. These adapters do open up purchase choices for canisters and across the length of Scotland they can potentially enable abandoned part-used or full canisters in bunkhouses and bothies to be used. There may be something available on AliExpress or similar but I have no experience of an adapter if there is. That said I continue to use adapters, but only where I am deliberately incorporating a different type of gas canister into my cookset from the outset. I’m better with the smaller, lighter camping stoves/canisters rather than the bigger ones, so I’m afraid I’ve not tried what you’re suggesting.Question: I know CampingGas and GoSystem have different diameters – one could fit into my TOAKS and the other didn’t! If relying on a gas stove you are invariably looking for an EN417 canister with a lindal valve with screw thread.
