About this deal

Liverpool is a city of two cathedrals, two tunnels ... and in 1892 became a city of two leading football clubs. In 1999, the crest became more colourful: various elements were changed from gold to green. The liver bird was also enlarged and freed from the small shield surrounding it.

Laurel wreaths were added to signify success, while the Latin motto Nil Satis Nisi Optimum (meaning "nothing but the best is good enough" was added at the same time. However, when Liverpool entered the European Cup Final, a special logo was also created in gold to commemorate the moment. The updated badge introduced a sleeker and more streamlined design. The Liver Bird was given a more dynamic and stylized appearance, with a forward-facing pose and wings slightly raised. While, like many famous Premier League logos, the Liverpool FC crest has undergone a few changes over the years, but the design today still pays tribute to the team’s heritage and history. Liverbird has remained an essential part of the Liverpool team’s visual identity since the beginning. There have only been a handful of instances wherein this “mascot” character has been removed from the crest entirely. A new yellow banner was introduced, showcasing the lifespan of the team, at the bottom of the shield. The motto, “You’ll never walk alone,” was presented at the top of the shield in its own yellow banner.

Mr Kelly eschewed the opportunity to incorporate a Liver Bird, in favour of a landmark more closely linked with the district of Everton. A very beautiful stuffed bird has been brought into our office, where it will be permitted to remain for inspection the whole of the day. The individual to whom it belongs, calls it the "Liver bird" from which some antiquarians derive the name of our native town. We know nothing of ornithology ourselves, and we have been taught to regard our corporation bird as the creature of fiction, like the renowned phoenix. The specimen which we now invite our readers to examine, may be familiar to naturalists, but we must be permitted to observe, that if there be such a bird as the liver, this must be one of the species, as the resemblance it bears to our best representation of that bird is most remarkable. It is about two feet high, and of a most elegant and symmetrical form. As this specimen has excited much curiosity, we hope some person, versed in this branch of natural history, will take the trouble to call and look at it. The historic Liver Bird is the object of their affections - and followers of the city's two great football clubs still can't decide who has a greater claim to her charms. The Royal Liver Building is a Grade I Listed Building, making it part of a collection of the UK's most prized buildings. Evidence from the club, however, said football supporters would recognise the symbol as referring to Liverpool FC, rather than the city.

The team also added two torches to the emblem in tribute to the memory of the Hillsborough stadium tragedy. Local legends suggest that one of the statues is a male Liver bird, whereas the other one is a female. One of the birds is reported to be looking out to sea to watch over the city’s seamen who are out working to provide for their families. The other bird is looking inwards towards the city to watch over the wives, girlfriends and families who have been left behind. The following season, notions to the club's centenary were removed and yellow accents were added for the first time. This logo also saw the introduction of two eternal flames in tribute to those who lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster. This celebratory logo only remained with the Liverpool FC team for a year before they switched to another classical emblem. This image was quite similar to the last, though it removed the “100 years” component, and the Liverbird was made a little larger.
