About this deal

For my specific use case, which now involves working from home instead of commuting to an office, it is in fact everything I wanted. This is all to say: Seeing a mug of coffee's temperature drop from 136°F (after 10 minutes) to 111°F (after 20 minutes) was enough to convince me that, for the right person, these temperature control mugs are a good way to solve a very common problem. Designed to be used on-the-go, this smart device will keep your drink just how you like it – so you can forget those disappointingly too cold or too hot brews. We didn’t have any issues cleaning it, but we were careful to avoid using any abrasive cleaners, per the manual’s recommendations. This change is in part thanks to the new touch-sensitive control panel that replaced the previous manual dial.

The new Ember Travel Mug 2+ is equipped with device location capabilities using Apple's Find My feature, which helps pinpoint the mug's exact location if misplaced and can also notify you if your mug has been left behind. The redesigned Charging Coaster for the Ember Tumbler is smaller and thinner than previous Charging Coasters for a reduced footprint. I did some cursory tests — you can read more about how I put it through the paces in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab below — and also just used it in my office life. Use the Ember app to set your temperature, customize presets for your favorite drinks, receive notifications when your desired temperature is reached, personalize your mug and more. Instead, I’d classify this as a really lovely luxury, an item that made drinking coffee better in a way that I hadn’t expected. The Ember Mug is also able to heat up a beverage that has cooled down, so you can pour lukewarm coffee in it to heat it back up, though this takes a lot of time and doesn't seem to be the best use case. I wander bleary-eyed into the kitchen, add some water to the kettle, and start heating it to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, grind some coffee beans, get out the Chemex, add and rinse a new filter, put the whole thing on a scale, add 40 grams of beans, slowly pour in 600 milliliters of hot water, pour it into my trusty silver Yeti Rambler, and pad into the living room to either play with my son or look at TikTok on my phone.

The company is now on the second generation of the product — the Ember Travel Mug 2 — which has a longer battery life and a new LED touch screen. ounces is on the smaller side for a travel cup and I do wish that it held more, but it needs to fit in a cup holder and have space for the battery, heating elements, and other hardware. To track the heat over time, I inserted a thermocouple (a thin, wire-like thermometer) into each mug and captured the data during Ember's stated battery life for each. I do, in fact, enjoy the experience of drinking coffee as it cools and identifying the different flavor notes that become present.I'm a slow drinker so I can exhaust that three hour battery life, and I appreciate the always-on charger option. The Ember Travel Mug’s touchscreen is convenient for those times when you don’t necessarily want to pull out your phone. It doesn't keep a drink warm without power and it's expensive, but it can keep a drink at a specific temperature for an extended length of time, which can't be replicated by an insulated cup. Which means I eventually learned to unclench my jaw and open my mind to the world of temperature-controlled mugs, which keep coffee hot for an extended period of time. We tested the second-generation Ember Travel Mug for several weeks, closely examining its performance, ease of use, design, and cost. The ionMug looked remarkably like many of the high-end mugs, with a matte black finish and a digital interface.

The Ember Travel Mug² uses seven temperature sensors, a rapid cooling system, a microprocessor-controlled heating system, and temperature presets to easily dial in your perfect temperature. We found that the coating not only makes the mug comfortable to hold but also helps improve your grip, preventing accidental drops. The ionMug had three temperature settings and heated coffee both off charger (for up to three hours) and on the charger (it’ll turn off after three hours of inactivity, but all you need to do is move it to remind it to keep heating). One tester of the Mug 2 said, "I was especially impressed that it not only kept my coffee hot, but it also heated up lukewarm leftover coffee by 20 degrees in only five minutes. It charges via a charging base that needs to be plugged in, and if the cup is on the base, it can keep a drink warm all day.At one point, the National Coffee Association recommended a serving temperature between 180-185°F, and a few articles I read latched onto that range. She has also covered related content such as the best travel coffee mugs and the best milk frothers. I'm not sure I have a great explanation, but it's a nice-to-have add-on for a product that's positioned as a small luxury. I found that most of the mugs tasted relatively the same after 90 minutes, save the Ember Travel, which was superior to the others.
