Players will lead a Viking Clan in the fight to defend a viking harbour town and earn the most glory in a bid to become Jarl and the favour of the Gods. At the start of each game two or more random locations are dealt out – approximately half of these will have military benefits and the others will be economic. The game’s theme is more appealing to me than Lords of Waterdeep and the box art is also more pleasing on the eye.

Champions of Midgard (formerly Defenders of Nidaros) is a middleweight, Viking-themed, worker placement game with dice rolling in which players are leaders of Viking clans who have traveled to an embattled Viking harbour town to help defend it against the threat of trolls, draugr, and other mythological Norse beasts. Lo agarré en descuento (me parece que 800 o 900) y además llegó antes de lo esperado en excelente estado. But it’s not exactly a strong differentiator that Champions of Midgard is another worker placement game, and that design schematic has become increasingly stale over the past year or so. I have purchased a few games lately and have enjoyed them all and Champions of midgard is one of them. Champions of Midgard is a worker placement game for 2-4 players that plays in just over an hour (once you know what you are doing). There is little player interaction though, aside from the blame tokens which you can give (they act as a minus score at the game end) to other players when you defeat a monster.

Enemies aside from the trolls have colours associated, and you get extra points for each set of these you collect. Han conseguido crear un juego muy temático con unas mecánicas, si bien no innovadoras, muy adaptadas a la ambientación.This week Paul examines Champions of Midgard, a 2015 game of running around a town, assembling a posse of dice and launching them at the biggest monster who’s currently available. Overall it’s a fun game that is a good entry level worker placement game that has a place in anyone’s collection. But short of its somewhat brisker playing time, I can’t imagine a scenario in which I would choose to play it over Lords of Waterdeep or any number of other more strategic worker placement games. Even the scant engineering it does to disincentivise this approach (prohibited warrior types on monsters and the food costs of journeys) are lackluster. Just FYI: the new aspects to Zoo Vadis (unique powers and peacocks) were added in (bolted on) by the good doctor himself.

Players will lead a Viking Clan in the fight to defend a viking harbour town and earn the most glory in a bid to become Jarl and the favour of the Gods. This product comes with both Champions of Midgard expansions (Valhalla and The Dark Mountains) as well as exclusive content not available at retail, all included inside a box designed to hold everything including the base game. There are eight rounds of play but it almost feels like two too many because it can feel somewhat repetitious. I’m not saying that ‘vast armies, sent as monolithic slaughtering machines’ is an optimal or even dominant strategy. You play as a great Viking leader, swarn to protect the town of Midgard and bring Glory to your kin.Or send them off to battle the troll and protect the village, or send them off to defeat the draugr and claim their burial treasures. Recruit warriors, gain powerful runes, and peer into the future - then send your faithful fighters on journeys to defeat fierce and mythical beasts.

Sólo tres detalles que no me encantaron: El reglamento no está muy bien redactado (tuve que buscar en internet una edición revisada y ver varios videos tutoriales) así que es un poquitín tardado de aprender. It makes Champions of Midgard sound like an utterly derivative product but honestly it’s hard for me to think of it in any other way. But in this design, the strongest monsters in the game might hit on the first four turns and go down easy to a player with a strong warrior pool and lots of favor tokens. Just take the dice you can’t assign to a monster and send them hunting for food for the next journey. I own and love Lords of Waterdeep and if you add the expansion to it, it’s simply one of the best worker placement games I have played.
