It is here that Valkyrie will have to fight the hardest — not only against the enemies who want her dead, but also against her own self-destructive impulses. And as the madness unfolds around him, as hidden enemies step into the light, and as Valkyrie is sucked into a desperate, lawless quest of her own, he has no choice but to become the hero he never really wanted to be – or die in the attempt. Derek touches on the dark, but has such an appreciation for the light (be it comedy, characterisation, motivation) that he can do both. And she had some vision that this dude (i still don't remember his name) would change reality or something.

While staying there, she was attacked by a strange man and was rescued by Skulduggery Pleasant, a mysterious skeleton mage.We learn this from the Masked Sisters, their Sensitives, and the Sanctuary Sensitives have also confirmed this.

Skulduggery Pleasant: Hell Breaks Loose

When it falls back into being a modern Skulduggery Pleasant book though, is when it falls completely flat on its face.A film adaption was in development under Warner Brothers but according to Derek Landy, the script was "the worst thing [he had] ever read", with Skulduggery Pleasant a "skeleton body who somehow retained his head and face", a magnifying glass magic wand, [50] and a musical number where he danced to Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror".

This was my least favourite of the Skulduggery novels - the plot seemed rushed and the writing lacked its personality and ease to me. And then as soon as serpine dies you just know at the end of it nothings going to have any effect in the future and it’s all going to go back to normal at the end which kinda of put a dampener on things as they move forward. I will say halfway through I DID NOT expect that plot twist, and it was quite out of left field but can why am I not surprised with the way phase 2 was handled. I was very disappointed at the half way mark and would have preferred the story of the first 150 pages to continue like the actual events stated in the Novels. Across a Dark Plain: 1861: (–1) The Dead Men traversed South Dakota on the hunt for their target, Nefarian Serpine. But it's the complexity about him that we see more of in HBL that makes Skulduggery my favourite character. That’s where the disappointment sets in because while I’m all for it, this new direction/pattern is something that hasn’t made me want to re-read the newer books compared to the way I used to want to read the phase one books. If you’ve read the other Skulduggery books by Derek Landy (and you really should have read them by now), you’ve seen it all before: Some bad guy wants to bring about the end of the world, and Skulduggery and Valkyrie fight valiantly to stop it from happening. However, this book, even if I'm giving it 3 stars, reminded me why I love this series so much and has tempted me to think about a potential series reread, whether I will act on that is pretty unlikely, but it has reminded me why I love this series and for that I am grateful.
