The film is adapted from a book of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis, and I would recommend that people watch the movie before the reading the book, due to the graphic nature of the written story. This film is most decidedly a satire that effectively captures its period setting and the motivations found in the yuppie culture as it speaks to materialism, narcissism, misogyny, and classism. I dutifully stood in line opening night, plunked down my hard-earned cash from my part-time job, and sat in a darkened theater expecting to be amazed. It comes at you as this eerie disembodied voice from God and it's really effective without smashing out other sound elements. Lionsgate has been on a kick adding a plastic slipcover to their SteelBooks to give the artwork some extra panache - and this one for American Psycho is probably their best yet. Bateman is the ultimate yuppie, judging everyone by what they are wearing and how they are wearing it, and becomes panicked and irrational if someone has anything better than what he has.
The 80s downtown' is only looseley related to the film, pretentious New York hipsters reminisce about the debauchery of new york in the period of the film. He is also a psychotic killer who rapes, murders, and dismembers both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or purpose.
A Wall Street yuppie hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies. Cultivating his serial killer persona as much as his yuppie lifestyle, the two sides of Patrick’s life soon begin to merge and he begins to wonder where one side of his life ends and the other begins. Justin Theroux and Christian Bale are shout-talking to each other but it's funny because the music hasn't been put in. The acting is generally excellent, Christian Bale able to portray both sides of Bateman flawlessly, with similar turns from Reese Witherspoon, Willem Defoe and Jared Leto.I noticed that film grain took on more emphasis here and there which some may interpret as background noise, but I didn’t detect any extraneous noise.
