About this deal

One of Evan’s most well-known songs, ‘Waltz for Debby’, is achingly beautiful and playful even when the band picks up. The six unaccompanied piano pieces from November 1969 are a wonderful bonus and give an indication of where Evans’ head was at the time (in a good place, on this evidence) – and the version of ‘My Funny Valentine’ is just killer. They illustrated how committed he was to furthering his music and ensuring he was focused on the interplay and dynamics that his fellow musicians deserved so that his music shone, whether in a trio or with an orchestra. Evans recorded a classic uptempo version of “My Funny Valentine” with guitarist Jim Hall on the 1962 album Undercurrent, but here he takes it at medium tempo and lingers over the individual notes in a way that makes you hear the lyrics in your head before adding inventive embellishments to the melody in his arrangement’s middle section.

Evans’s piano playing explores an inner world where everything makes sense and is pristine and beautiful.Interestingly, there's an emphasis throughout this double set on Evans’ own compositions, which might be a reflection of his confidence during this period. I would never pretend to be an Evans scholar, or even expert, but I am an unabashed fan who loves the man's playing and writing; so every release from the endlessly capacious Evans vaults is eagerly awaited chez moi. Come Rain or Shine’ opens with a piano flourish so alive one almost doesn’t care whether the main melody ever arrives.

As a carefully curated compilation, "Treasures" presents a rare and invaluable snapshot of the pianist's creative journey, and encompasses his unparalleled ability to communicate emotion through his fingers. All About Jazz has been a pillar of jazz since 1995, championing it as an art form and, more importantly, supporting the musicians who create it. The beautifully designed package includes previously unpublished photos, insightful liner notes and interviews. This is the quickest I've resold an RSD release, and it wasn't a hard decision to make even though I lost money on it. Bill Evans sets such as Treasures: Solo, Trio and Orchestra Recordings from Denmark (1965-1969) seemingly fall from the heavens on a regular basis.

Treasures' is a set of never-before-released live recordings by jazz piano icon Bill Evans in solo, trio and orchestral performances from the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, and Danish television and radio broadcasts from the mid-to-late 1960s, deluxe 2CD set. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). While the ’60s and ’70s were a time of rupture in jazz, with the rise of free improv and fusion, Evans mostly worked within relatively narrow parameters—acoustic post-bop played with trios, some solos, a few duos, an occasional date with a larger band. The LPs drawn from the Village Vanguard sessions in 1961, when he recorded with his great trio that included Scott LaFaro on bass Paul Motian on drums, are widely considered to be the pianist’s high-water mark, but he was an artist of unusual consistency, not just in quality but also in musical vision. It's an absolute must-have for jazz aficionados and anyone seeking to explore the enchanting sphere of Bill Evans' music.Dawson too played for many greats but isn’t nearly as well known as he deserved to be (perhaps because a back injury in his forties forced him to give up performing), and delivers a strong performance.

There’s a lot of music too, with plenty of variety: two hours and 18 minutes comprising one solo set, four pure trio performances with varying bassists and drummers, and a trio augmented by a symphony orchestra and big band. The emotion in his playing comes from that inner world exploration as his fingers match the tone of his piano keys to each emotion his quest uncovers. Treasures is kind of like four mini-albums in one: You get a taste of Evans in a pickup trio, another with him and one of his most reliable collaborators, a suite for orchestra, and then an excellent solo set. The pianist was starting to think more ambitiously and expansively during the mid-1960s, culminating in the lush ‘orchestral suite’ here from 1969, arranged by Palle Mikkelborg, which sees Bill again in an outgoing mood; it's great, but there's not enough Evans. But Treasures: Solo, Trio and Orchestra Recordings from Denmark (1965-1969) is just getting started. The artifact-laden, heavy application of 'No Noise'-style filters make this almost a chore for me to listen to in places, in spite of how good the performances may be. From your date of purchase your product is warranted against faulty materials or workmanship for a period of 12 months. An official Elemental Music release in collaboration with the Bill Evans Estate, 'Treasures' is a 'holy grail' discovery culled from the private collection of Norwegian jazz musician Ole Matthiessenand released for the very first time as a 2CD limited-edition in deluxe packaging.
