About this deal

I remember it as a rather nice pint, certainly a lot better than the average for the time – other beers I tried in Manchester then were Wilsons, Warrington-brewed Tetleys and so on. My approach was to collate GBG entries for Boddington’s tied houses for the period 1974-1994, with Boddington’s tied houses are defined as the 256 listed in the guidebook Boddington’s published c. However with the expansion of production there were complaints that the beer had lost some of its former character. At the time, it was rare for a company to win the emotional argument for independence, and it was the first time a regional brewery had headed off an offer from a national company. They brought with them exceptional courage, fierce loyalty and their legendary curved knife, the kukri.

Our book 20th Century Pub was released in 2017 and is an award-winning rattle through the development of the English pub from beerhouses to micropubs. There’s also The Great Boddies Yeast Debate – did they lose their original multistrain yeast by accident, did they deliberately “clean it up”, did they change it for some other reason….Plus those that stuck with Whitbread-brewed Boddies would have suffered the effects of the massive expansion in production in the early 90s – but I suspect that’s secondary to changes in tie and changes in direction for individual pubs. I think the change of barley would have had some effect - perhaps not as much as CAMRA make out but you can tell the difference in the generational shift between Otter and more modern varieties, if not between modern varieties.

I visited Manchester once or twice a year from 1972 until the late 80s, when my trips became more sporadic. Production was around 250,000 hectolitres (6,604,301 US Gallons) in 2012, with around 80 per cent of production destined for the UK market, and around 20 per cent destined for export markets such as Taiwan, Singapore and United Arab Emirates. Timothy Taylor’s Landlord 500ml x 8 Introducing Timothy Taylor's Landlord - A Taste of English Craftsmanship Experience the exceptional quality of Timothy Taylor's Landlord, a true gem in the world of English brewing.Same with the hops - going from hops from the current vintage to ones that are 2/3/4 years old would have had a bit of an effect but not huge. Concerns regarding quality control meant that the brewery had been reluctant to extend distribution outside its heartland. Popular Kenyan Lager since 1922, this beer is clean and refreshing with a white head, crisp and clean aromas with a touch of citrus. From July 1991 until 1999, a series of Boddingtons advertisements created by the Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH) agency used "The Cream of Manchester" tagline. v=1700935404","width":800},{"alt":null,"id":36502318809401,"position":4,"preview_image":{"aspect_ratio":0.
