About this deal

Intimacy is when you’re familiar with your emotions, then share your feelings, your fears, your shame, your hopes and joys with another person. My undergraduate degree is in psychology, so I’m always interested in books about psychotherapy and the resilience of human mind in the face of trauma and abuse. I also keep remembering how insane her tangent was about the obgyn she met at Central Park who had just had a patient die. If the title of this book did not imply that the real-life psychological horror stories within it actually had happy endings, it might be almost unbearable to read. A llows one the privilege of seeing the therapist-patient relationship as an essentially human interaction.

They completed therapy successfully, and they have turned from hurt beings into people who can have a more positive approach to life again.

This makes Lori Gottlieb’s Maybe You Should Talk To Someone—a book that I enjoyed but that was brought down to a measly three stars by the author’s own inserted story—look like child’s play.

Gildiner, and since I love books that can create hope, Good Morning, Monster is definitely a 5 star book for me. In spite of his PTSD, he goes on to make a meaningful life for himself until he is faced with tragedy that brings this proud man to his knees and, fortunately, into therapy with Gildiner. G's therapy and how she evolved as a psychologist, but her patients' incredible recoveries instilled my faith in the human spirit; its resilience, its desire to survive, and its wondrous ability to overcome unspeakable acts only prove good can triumph over evil. The book details five different patients treated by Catherine Gildiner, patients she considers "heroes" because they endured horrible things in their lives and were able to come out better on the other side. Since reading Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed last year, I've been so eager to find something similar.Alana is initially referred to Gildiner through another therapist who is working with Alana’s partner and has concerns about Alana. I have been listening to this book and was loving it until I got to the part about Danny and how Gildiner spoke of him, what felt like low key fetishizing him and then validating his abuser.

When Laura had been intent on defending her father, she'd blocked many of her negative memories of him; but now, after two years of therapy, those painful memories began to flow like hot lava.My guess is that they agreed based on the idea that there would be more focus on the hero, less on the trauma and victimization. Gildiner has worked with each patient as their therapist, seeing each one for a period of four to five years, and uses their cases as studies for her book’s exploration of the human capacity for resilience and survival. Both reference child abuse, substance misuse, verbal and physical abuse, sexual assault, rape, suicide, and suicidal ideation. She had the luxury of being able to see her clients for years, something that’s sometimes prohibitive in America due to insurance and HMO restrictions. From explaining Freudian and Gestalt therapeutic techniques to outlining the ways in which she had made mistakes with these patients, Good Morning, Monster is as much Gildiner's professional memoir as it is a grouping of case studies meant to demonstrate what she means by “the hero's journey”.Man labai patiko, kad Catherine nevaidino Dievo ir drąsiai skaitytojui prisipažino nežinojusi kaip elgtis su vienokia ar kitokia paciento trauma. Gildiner's approach, while it does not account for biology, is intellectual, compassionate, and creative, and provides a path for her patients to do the hard work and reap the benefits of getting better. Gildiner has drawn from her extensive experience as a clinical professional and the numerous patients she has treated. Then as he made space for himself she centered her white guilt and boasted about the work she did to understand his culture. The author, a psychologist, shares the backstories and therapeutical journey of five of her patients who had to work extremely hard over a long period of time to deal with and overcome what happened to them in their childhood.
