The Show Must Go On was a perfect career summation for the band, though no one knew at the time it would be the last single released in Freddie's lifetime. The 17 tracks were universal, with no territorial variations as with the first Greatest Hits compilation. Unlike its predecessor, the tracklist remained unanimous around the world – no variations were offered based on the territory. In 1991, Queen sought to issue a second Greatest Hits collection worldwide, this time with a standard track listing. This was due to an aggressive marketing campaign by Hollywood Records, with whom Queen had signed the year before. I don’t mind some surface noise from an old weathered vinyl, but a new one is a little annoying even after cleaning multiple times. Las Palabras de Amor", "Thank God It's Christmas", " These Are the Days of Our Lives" and "Princes of the Universe" were later included on Greatest Hits III.

Some tracks were not even singles in the US (" One Year of Love") or anywhere (" Stone Cold Crazy"). The compilation contains most of their chart hits between 1981-1991, and was the final album released by Queen before Freddie Mercury passed away later that year. Most of the videos are now available on the DVD Greatest Video Hits 2 with the exception of the videos from the 1991 Innuendo album.

Speculation was rising about the state of Freddie's health, which was being reported on an almost daily basis. The album was not initially available in the United States and was later replaced with its counterpart Classic Queen in early 1992 to capitalize on the band's comeback in the country following the inclusion of Bohemian Rhapsody in Wayne's World.
