About this deal

It does have a third-act breakup that lasts for a while, but the author uses time jumps and chapter cuts to make passing the time bearable. This was a VERY slow burn story, like almost to the end slow burn but honestly for this couple and their situation it worked. I just could not take this book seriously, adding (more like trying) thriller aspects towards the end of the book was also just unnecessary. He trusted Zoey's judgement on things and he barely knew her, which I am not sure many people would do. He offers to drop her off where she’s going when she freaks out that she’s missed her bus and he takes her and figures out that it’s a homeless shelter and because they were late she’ll be on the streets that night so he offers his couch. After Zoey ends up helping Ryan with his computer trouble, he offers her his card in case she ever needs anything. He’s tried to be a part of the team but they aren’t having it, so he’s devoted himself to training and doing the best job he can on the ice but even the team owner and general manager has told him he needs to figure out a way to be a bigger part of the team. There was a bit of a twist at the end of it (but a good one) and while I had figured out a part of it, the big twist was a bit of a surprise.

During that time when they were apart, Ryan's friend arranges a blind date for him once, seeing he is a mess but even though he agrees to meet her, he doesn't feel anything about that woman.

He was such a real guy as well; I loved his struggle with loneliness and his attempts in trying to bond with his team even though they were hellbent on ostracizing him. Our reviews, posts and special features are copyright of Simply Love Book Reviews unless otherwise noted. This was amazing for the first half and then the author started throwing in all sorts of convolutions that brought this down. I've never read anything by this author and this is book 2 of a series, but it can definitely be read as a standalone.I appreciated that Ryan was written as a person who was aware of the power he had in their relationship as friends and eventually romantic partners and Odette made a point not to exploit that just for the sake of steamy sex scenes. Odette not only handles it with grace, but is incredibly realistic about what Zoey's life is like and dives deep into the emotions of her reality. Rating the first three books in this series on the over the top crazy scale; Puck Me Secretly level 5 over the top/crazy, Home Game level 1 over the top/crazy, The Penalty Box (this book) level 3 over the top/crazy.

These books have the hockey romance I am looking for but also so much more with the action/suspense.And just when things are looking pretty dark for Zoey, Ryan takes over as her Knight in Shining Skates and saves the day.
