About this deal

I am a huge fan of Jo Nesbo and read all of the Harry Hole series and devoured each one within a few days. He’ll need to bring together a misfit team of former operatives to accomplish what he can’t do alone: stop an unstoppable killer. One of Harry's bar friends is a 72-year-old woman named Lucille, a former actress who borrowed over nine hundred thousand dollars for a movie project.

No one believes him when he says the telephone booth out by the edge of the woods sucked Tom into the receiver like something out of a horror movie.Liz Foley, publishing director, and Katie Ellis-Brown, deputy publishing for crime, thriller and crossover fiction, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Niclas Salomonsson at the Salomonsson Agency. Perhaps some readers simply don’t mind Nesbo’s description of young women as “parasitic bimbos on the hunt for a suitable host” because, as he asserts, it’s traditional. In this 13th instalment in the Harry Hole series, Harry is no longer in the police force - instead, he is in Los Angeles and slowly drinking himself to death due to personal tragedy and his general melancholia. It added: “When another classmate disappears, Richard must find a way to prove his innocence – and preserve his sanity – as he grapples with the dark magic that is possessing Ballantyne and pursuing his destruction.

Here’s a taste of that, and if this isn’t the author projecting his women-hating fantasies upon his characters, then what is it? Harry Hole is back and does his own thing, intends to drink himself to death and while being serious in that intend finds himself being a knight in shining Armor. In Oslo, two girls have disappeared and been found murdered and one of the suspects is a well-known real estate magnate. This is a shortish novel at 224 pages but it sure packs a punch and that punch differs in each of the sections with the style of writing altering too. A spooky looking house, a flesh eating telephone, creepy insects everywhere; are they real or hallucinations?

The only ally Richard has is Karen, a fellow outsider and crush, who encourages him to pursue clues the police refuse to investigate. Back in 2020, Nesbo told The Guardian that “Violence against women is a problem in society—it is something we should talk about. When bad stuff started happening around him, it was hard for me to care enough to sympathize with him. Hole si ritrova in Norvegia a lavorare come investigatore privato e per risolvere il caso forma una squadra unica di investigatori composta da uno psicologo malato terminale, un agente di polizia corrotto e un amico d'infanzia spacciatore di cocaina. He’s awkward, he’s a bit of an ass and he has self-destructive tendencies that threaten to ruin his personal and professional lives. Struck off the force, down and out in Los Angeles, it seems that nothing can entice him back to Oslo.
