About this deal

The headline in the Daily Mirror said that spoons present an ‘OD (overdose) risk for kids’ but it may be unhelpful to refer to overdoses in this manner as readers might assume it means there is a risk of serious outcomes, such as death.

It only says don't use a spoon because you can't use a regular tea spoon of arbitrary size, a medicine spoon is fine, as is a different medicine syringe, and if necessary a measuring spoon. If you find you have read something that has upset or offended you an anyway please unread it at once. I once had a young mother who took the childs antibiotic herself, because the label said 'take' and not 'give' the dose. I've noticed that you can set up 'trusted directions' in cedgedims Pharmacy Manager that allows you to translate some of these into better worded directions. Manuka bushes have also thrived here since the 1880’s, the first grown outside of New Zealand and producing the most delicious honey. As a Tech who trained in the late 80s in hospital I find my standards as a Tech are higher than those who train in retail ie I always capitalise the quanity and frequency and also use ONE capsule to be taken . If you forget to take a dose, check the information on the leaflet inside the packaging, or ask your pharmacist or doctor for advice on what to do. Odd that one of the supposed benefits to accuracy and patient safety and a benefit to dispensing sites (no need to rekey the data!Take 2 4 times a day if req is configured to translate to Take Two tablets up to four times a day if required. If you are concerned about how to measure out and give medicine to your child, ask your pharmacist, who can advise you. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. If you have a very young baby you can dribble it in slowly so the spoon doesn’t surprise them, but you have a toddler is that right? In those circumstances I would say 30ml using the measure provided, but actually I still prefer six 5ml spoonfuls, and tell them about using a measure.

A teaspoon is 5ml, so if you have metric measuring items, such as a measuring jug or even a clean medicine cap, you can do a quick measurement that way. You can take codeine at any time of day but try to take it at the same times every day, and space your doses evenly. But, as a responsible pharmacist, it is our duty to make the instructions as clear as possible for even a lay man understand. Talk to your doctor if your pain or diarrhoea is not relieved by the dose of codeine prescribed for you, or if side effects bother you or do not go away. People are advised to never use a household teaspoon to administer liquid medication as they vary in size.
