A slight shame about this book and the other books in the series is that some of the flaps are very small, and therefore fragile. The angles in particular of the book flaps seem to make them prone to damage, even with supervision. My daughter has thoroughly enjoyed this book and all of the other books in the Tales of Acorn Wood series since she was about 8 months old.

Many story books are a bit more advanced for this age group and many books designed for this age group seem to be centred around non-fiction (in our experience), so we really have enjoyed collecting them all - I will always treasure them as the first stories and series my daughter has been interested in. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.The stories are on the simpler side (perhaps even a little boring for adults/older children) but I think this is where the books stand out for their specialism for babies and younger toddlers.

Axel Scheffler is a star illustrator whose instantly recognizable, warm and witty illustrations have achieved worldwide acclaim and numerous awards. All of the series are great for animal recognition and I have loved seeing my daughter initially point to, and now name the different animals. The illustrations are truly lovely and they have provided great opportunities for discussing friendship, woodland animals, and in this story, different colours (the books), food and sharing with friends.
