Though its flaws can sometimes be obvious, the storyline is decent enough to keep us involved and there is some suspense here even if it all falls apart in the end. The commentary ends up being at its best when the two touch on subjects like this and the period it comes from, the Hollywood of the ‘90’s where bidding wars for high concept spec scripts like Flatliners broke out all too often and high concept films were simply the norm. Detail has been cleaned up, colors seem to have a bit more pop and the dark levels (lest we forget, this is a pretty dark film) seem a lot better balanced.

This does not reduce or diminish the film, it merely helps it be explored from a different perspective. They make some interesting comments about another Schumacher film, Falling Down, and if a label ever decides to do a new edition for that one it may well be worth pulling in these two for it.

For Rachel, her atonement is not from herself, rather it takes the form of realizing that it wasn’t actually her fault that her father killed himself. There’s also discussion around the lights created to tie scenes together, referred to as “penis lights” here. The light is cool neon, the sets are like the leftovers from Blade Runner and the story is just plain daft. Enough about the cast, though I have neglected to mention Kevin Bacon and this movie certainly helped his “Six Degrees” stature. With the future star-studded cast, the classic 90s film tone bleeds through and director Joel Schumacher was able to leave his mark with what is now a cult classic.All those neons now have real depth and it really does add to the look and sound of the film giving greater clarity and depth to the many night time scenes.
