About this deal

I like the MG30 mainly for its clean / crunch amps and I'm not much in high gain models but I see why/where the SLO or VIVO might appears as a problem. My only minor gripe is that the PSU isn’t the most robust thing ever (it’s on a par with Zoom PSUs) but that’s it.

That's because they reproduce the sound of a mic'd cabinet into a Full Range Flat Response (FRFR) cabinet. As I use impulse responses reproducing my own cabs, I can obtain really similar tones from the real amps in the room and from the MG30 throught the board.another very important point in my experience: you will always need your own monitor both on stage and in the rehearsal room; using the PA together with the singer (and sharing the speaker with him/her/them) generally means that you both will be dissatisfied because you both can't hear yourselves; in case in the reahearsal room you can use also a little the PA just to help your bandmates to hear you if your monitor isn't powerful enough or if it is placed in an unfavourable position. but that's what makes it sound harsh as a simple FX pedalboard and the reason why I've a flattening preEQ in all my patches.

Still, when rehearsing with the band and I connect the MG 30 straight to Mixer/PA via 1/4 output jack (in mono) have to say I am disappointed by the results. Here, the innovative 5-Way Encoder is used for easy navigation through any menus, while four additional parameters can be set easily and precisely via the lower four knobs. And the updates are once/twice a year and pretty significant since they brought on the team that used to work for Digitech. As an attached file below is the frequency response of two line level preamp channels in 4CM in the MG30. Modulatable signal chain consisting of 11 independent blocks (Comp, EFX, Amp, IR, EQ, Mod, Delay, Reverb.

I've owned most of the big boy digital stuff including Kemper, Fractal and Helix, so I have a fairly good idea of what these things are capable of. So to recap, none of the output modes are flat, and tweaking the output mode EQ and/or the preEQ will not necessarily help. I used a clean deluxe amp combined with the T Screamer style overdrive and could get such a warm creamy sound out of it. With the "flattening para EQ" trick, it becomes much more convincing to my ears (and it diminishes the hiss with some simulations). I could go back and forth between real tube preamp and digital sim with minimal differences in this case. You have to connect it to your pc via usb to upload the IR's, but it's super easy to use and the IR loader on it works like a charm. NOTES - the scooped mids in COMBO REAR and STACK REAR modes finally appear to me as a way to keep the characteristic EQing of a preamp when all FX's and simulations are disabled in the MG-30. Also if you are doing gigs alone or with just another person and you want to spice up your songs with rhythm and layer some loops and bass lines.
