About this deal

I spoke to my surveyor about it and he wanted me to drill a few 1” holes to see if the water had penetrated the wood.

But instead of doing it right he opted for simply filling up the hole between the two GRP-layers of the roof with soft silicone.Shrouds deviate those forces into the chain plates which for themselves should be fitted tightly to the hull where the forces will be finally absorbed. A lot more made it onto the list during work, I guess that´s the normal way when digging deeper and deeper into the bowels of an old ship. Eventually I had them disassembled and took of the counterparts of the chain plates and had a look: Though made of stainless steel I could spot a lot of rust but I´m pretty confident that this is just superficial and wouldn´t be a problem to remove. PS: Best advice, higher a rigger (no dog in the fight) they are very familiar with substructures to the rigging, and can give you some sound advice on what direction to take for proper repairs.

The very two chain plates which have caused the core in the beams to partially disintegrate have done much more damage to the roof. Then you could re-glass from inside the cupboard along the forward edge of the new bulkhead and glass sections on the after edge where you can get access through cupboards etc. When exposed to constant moisture – as it is the case when used trying to seal the duct of the chain plates – it will rather soak and swell and quickly loose it´s (nevertheless poor) sealing qualities.

The chain plate is bolted to a large triangle piece of wood, and the wood in turn is connected to the body of the the boat on each side, and ends at the wooden floor. Over the years (55+) surveying, I inspected many dismastings and partials because of partial and full bulkheads shreading apart, the ones that did retain the rig was only because the chain plate bolts caught on the bottom side of the deck.

Rot spores travel with water migration, you may think you got it all and 6 months to a year you have rot forming again. Steves comment " In my experience I have fitted several of these and each time I lost 1 or all of the nuts of the back, this then inolves drilling 3 holes in the deck to form a slot and taping on a nut to a spanner to re-fit plate.Instead of silicone one should utilize marine sealants based on polyurethane such as made by 3M or the all-time classic Sicaflex. As a sailing yacht is sailing, different forces are applied to the whole system of standing rigging all the time. The chain keeper will bridge the gap from the open door to where the magnet is mounted and can be cut down to size. Like I said in my earlier reply, there is no partial repair, this partial bulkhead requires total replacement, I would not doubt that the one on the other side is probably as bad.
