About this deal

If they will accept it, the only suggestion I would have is to haul it there in a plastic bag (in the back of a car, or maybe in a little red wagon if the place is close). The worms aren’t trapped in the worm farm as the bottom is cut out, so they are free to come and go, as are any other critters looking for some lunch. I would love to set up my own kennel/shelter in the future and plan to build a large-scale composter (perhaps made from a second-hand IBC tote,) located uphill from an ornamental garden bed, so that the contents flow down and fertilize the bed. After back filling the hole the only part of the composter showing will be the stickup portion of the pipe. When you pick up a shovel full of dog stool, cover it with a shovel full of carbon material like grass clippings.

Even the ones that are certified home compostable take 6 months to compost, and that is in a regular compost bin, not a worm farm. With a regular composter, gardeners are trying to make plenty of compost that they can spread on top of their vegetable beds and flower beds. Unlike most composting techniques, this involves an anaerobic process that requires you deprive the organic waste of oxygen as much as possible. As dog owners, there’s more to picking up poop than keeping our parks and pavements clean; it’s about doing it with as little environmental impact as possible. Collect the dog waste: Use a pooper scooper or a plastic bag (or non-recyclable plastic packaging from groceries!Answer: People like Henry Owens are repeating stupid things they read from books and have no idea what is toxic. Bacteria are everywhere, and when I start a compost heap I throw on a little soil (which, by the way, contains bacteria). Fiona Nevile on Fiona’s traditional elderflower cordial recipe Hi Peta, Yes it does ferment a little = that is what you want.

Maybe you walk on remote trails and flick your dog’s doody into the bushes, thinking it is fine because it will decompose naturally, and no one is going to tread on it there. Each year, tons of pet waste is thrown into trash cans and ends up in sanitary landfills, by composting we can reduce the amount of waste in landfills. I am not sure if you have much of an issue with flies where you live so you may need to toss another carbon material (like grass clippings) on top of the dirty straw if this is a problem for you. If the dogs have been wormed, the poo cannot be added until the wormer has cleared the dog’s system.

Founded in 1884, the not-for-profit AKC is the recognized and trusted expert in breed, health, and training information for all dogs. Composting dog waste also keeps tons of material from being added to a landfill or sewer system that is already overwhelmed.
