The willingness of installers to try our clips is due in a large part to their dislike of working with the stamped metal clips. Further, the contoured face 20 of the lead-ins 16 causes the lead-ins 16 to lay in a flattened position when installed. In this manner, multiple pieces of material 11 are connected together to form a roof or other structure. the installer can insert a second sheet of material between the lead-ins 16 on the opposing ends 13 of the tapered arms 12 . Once the lead-in 16 is inserted onto the edge of the material 11, the contoured face 20 provides a smooth, contoured surface for the material 11 to slide over as the H clip 10 is completely inserted.This does make some extra work in the carpentry and roofing but the pay off is you do not get a visible seam where the two are joined. The 2006 edition of the International Residential Code (IRC) requires the use of H-clips in construction, but not all jurisdictions comply with IRC regulations.

H-clips may also allow builders to use thinner sheathing than they otherwise would be permitted to use. The tape must be centered and adequate pressure applied on all sides of the clip to ensure a reliable seal. I am about to install the sheathing on the rafters, and I am putting H-clips in between the sheathing. If it is a 4-12 slope or greater pass on the 5/8 and go 1/2" with H clips to save some money and 1/2 a log from the veneer mill.Generally in the IRC it states that edges must be nailed every 6 inches and in the field of the panel every 12 inches; nail sizes are listed too. H-clips provide additional stiffness between bearing points for the unsupported edges of wood panel (plywood or OSB) roof sheathing, along with the necessary 1/8” gap for expansion, as shown below illustrated on a bag of Simpson H-clips.
