Its a great introduction to tabletop roleplaying, it feels almost friendly even if you are slaying goblins and zombie rats. If there’s one weak link in the chain, it’s the tokens, whose flimsy card and one-sided print job stand in stark contrast to the lush finish on the map and GM screen. The other thing i didn't like is that when heros reach 0 hit points after the battle is over they are supposed to be able to get back up and resume play as normal, this reduces the sense of danger for the character so can lead to reckless player behaviour with their heros. There are maps with high quality detailed graphics and grids for all the major encounters of the included adventures. In the Starter Set adventure, your brave cats and dogs must take on the evil Doktor and free his unfortunate prisoners. All our other animals were rescued or surrendered from other zoos or breeding facilities (with a few other rare cases). It’s located in a small and rustic, private orchard in the beautiful Kent countryside, and is charming and understated rather than large, slick and commercial. If your number is equal to or higher than the foe you are fighting then you hit, and you roll for damage based on the weapon’s stats.

One of my new skills has been starting to learn to be a Tabletop RPG Gamemaster (GM) via some pre-made game sets that have been designed to get our two kids A (a fifth grader) and W (a second grader) into tabletop gaming. There is tons of room for exploration and discovery throughout the story, which the kids I played with loved the freedom of.

I don’t think I could turn it over to an eight-year-old to run as the GM if they are not pretty experienced with tabletop RPGs, but I feel like teens and adults can make that leap more easily. We also got to feed some of the other animals, including alpacas, donkeys and turkeys, which was another treat for us. A lot of one shots that might not fit well with other campaigns may actually work well for these characters. Fortunately, though, this little book does offer something extra special: it sets out, immediately and unabashedly, to simplify the core gameplay of 5E (and roleplaying in general) and make it more palatable for absolute beginners – and, most especially, for young people. Not only did they get along for several hours without fighting (a near miracle lately), but we had to wait to do the final scene on another day and they were actually disappointed they had to stop for the day.
