About this deal

The Encore grinds beans quickly and evenly for every application, apart from advanced espresso making, and it’s simple to use and adjust. With most coffees, the C2’s handle spins with almost no resistance, making this model almost a pleasure to use, after trying the other manual grinders. More importantly, blade grinders have literally no way to set the grind size for a drip pot over a French press, unlike an electric grinder. If this is your number one issue, you might consider a manual grinder; they’re less messy and also easier to use over a sink or a trash can.

The efficient DC motor keeps your beans cool, even during extended grind times, while a combination of electric and gear speed reducers slow the burr to 450 RPM, ensuring a smooth bean feed and reducing noise, heat and static buildup.

I’ve got nothing against an espresso shot, but it’s too strong and intense a flavor for me to get really excited by it.

Burr grinders can grind coarsely enough for a traditional French press or cold-brew batch, but they can also do a medium grind for drip and a medium-fine grind for pour-over. None has been easy and reliable for me that I can not-mention this topic in this Baratza Encore review. Because of how a blade grinder works, it’s always going to “lose track” of individual beans and bits, and so it’ll make some into fine powder, while leaving other bits as big half-bean hunks. However, if you’re looking for something more advanced, then you might want to go for the Fellow Ode or 1Zpresso Jx, instead.

Burrs: Manufactured in Europe, the Encore ESP’s 40mm conical M2 steel burrs produce consistent and precise grinds required for espresso and filter brewing methods.

It also has a light that lets you clearly see the level of grounds in the bin, which is a nice addition, especially if you grind a lot of beans at once. Baratza offers great warranty and out-of-warranty service, even for refurbished versions, and these grinders are an industry standard for a reason. So whether your brew of choice is the French Press or the espresso, the Baratza Encore provides consistent grinds for both – and everything in between – giving you the chance to experiment and explore your taste preference. The coarsest grind isn’t wildly different from medium, though the Capresso (our former budget pick) can grind a bit finer than the OXO.

Lots of directions for different brewers (either online or with the included manual) will actually specify grind sizes for the Baratza Encore. For those who want to travel with the C2, the folding handle may or may not be a better option–-it weighs a little more than the original handle, which is just as easy to take off and just place beside the grinder body in your bag.
