About this deal

Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. I’ve read quite a few fairytale retellings and I think so far this has got to be one of the most hard hitting in that respect.

The Norsemen made their claim on our shores, and at Dublin they set up a ship camp and began to winter over, so that no time of year was safe. She also introduces a secondary story in the character of Simon, a young English soldier her family captures and tortures.Sorcha has black hair and wide green eyes and bares a strong resemblance to their mother, who died birthing her. Although it is only rarely and obliquely referred to in the book, the symmetry between their suffering seems to be related to the mysterious “long game” played by the faeries. Clodagh shares a psychic mind-link with her twin sister Deirdre ( Dair-dra), just as her father, Sean, shares with his twin Liadan.

Marillier does not spare us details, either of the assault itself, Sorcha’s feelings, both physical and mental during it, and the profound impact it has on Sorcha afterwards, including her near phobia of men and her sense of shame and resentment. Liam stays with Sorcha in Sevenwaters, and Finbar disappears in the waters, leaving only a feather behind. He is characterized as a big man and handsome, (all the village girls want him), and a skillful ruler. And only Maeve and her little brother Finbar have the ability to save their family, their clan, and perhaps all of Erin.

Of course, they have risks themselves, the possibility of being hunted, for example, but when they change they really do become a swan with very basic instincts, thoughts and feelings whereas Sorcha is living every moment. One thing the author does magnificently well is the fact that I was never really sure if Sorcha would manage to break the curse. After decades as Ciaran's familiar, his story wins the sympathy of Padriac's daughter, the fierce Aisha who is visiting for the first time from norseland Xixón. After years of solitary struggle, Sorcha is saved from drowning by a British lord, Hugh of Harrowfield (a.

Daughter of the Forest is, after all, based on a fairy tale, and it satisfies the requirements of fantasy first and foremost. Sorcha embodies that kind of heroism exactly, going through constant pain, and indeed partial disfigurement of her hands, as well as a number of other trials, all for the sake of her brothers. The Sevenwaters Trilogy is a historical fantasy series by Juliet Marillier which was first published as a series of three novels between 1999 and 2001, and then later extended. In a short space of time, Marillier has given us enough information to care about each one of Sorcha’s brothers and be upset at their fate. Throughout the novel, it is her task to break her brothers' spell, and she can only do so if she sews a shirt for each of them out of a brittle, needle-like plant that causes her hands to wrinkle and deform like that of an old woman's.

I’m actually amazed at how well most of the characters are written – for instance, she has 6 brothers and not one of them is forgotten about and you can distinctly tell them all apart.
