Everyone has seen these lenses, and it is usually the lens everyone associates hanging off a camera when you see a “big white lens. PRO features the world's first Dual VCM (voice coil motor) AF which are two individually controlled linear drive motors make AF performance extremely fast and very smooth. The apertures are formed by a 9-blade rounded diaphragm; the fast aperture, rounded blades, and 300mm equivalent focal length predicts decent bokeh in the out of focus areas. The lens offers a 70cm minimum focusing distance at all focal lengths and is ideal for capturing wildlife, sports, events, travel, portrait and weddings. Given that all Olympus compact system cameras – and the Panasonic GX7 – feature an in-body anti-shake system, it is not surprising that the Olympus M.

A manual focus clutch mechanism is engaged by snapping the focus ring rearward, which also reveals a focus scale marked on the lens barrel. Pulling the focus collar back sends the lens to manual focus mode, regardless of what focusing method you have set on the camera. It is a widely known fact that the angle of view of a lens depends not only on the focal length but also on the focus distance set, and this effect is particularly pronounced on this lens. You may enjoy more success than I did, but I failed to capture any convincing sequences of subjects approaching me at speed, whether birds, cyclists or kids running around. Beyond the obvious main specification—which would be 80-300mm (equivalent) with a “fast” aperture—the lens has other features that are found in Olympus’ “Pro” lineup, including a Splash Proof designation. So for me, there has been no perceptible compromise in quality – and I enjoy the many benefits of smallness.These independently controlled linear focus motors are fast and smooth, perfect for a range of subjects even when they might be fast moving. When I first saw the close focus distance and lack of a focus limiting switch, I was prepared to be disappointed moving from extremely close to extremely far subjects. In this position, the focus ring has no stops, hard or soft, at either end of the focus range – which is again typical of an MFT lens. Inside the dust-free and splash-proof lens body are a variety of specialized elements that feature the ZERO lens coating, including one aspherical, one high refractive index, and five extra-low dispersion elements for improved imaging performance.

This lens achieves a compact, lightweight and high performance by taking advantage in this product of the hallmarks of the Micro Four Thirds System standard to achieve a maximum aperture of f2.
