About this deal

I loved the relationship Henri had with his uncle, and how not only him, but his family, would go to his uncle for difficult conversations. Sometimes you just want a book that might not absolutely blow your mind, but will be a thoroughly enjoyable end of summer contemporary.

The guy's running around all day—charming people, making it by with dog walking, running to his next engagement, and having a constant dialogue with himself in his head—and it's a lot.The only thing that redeems the book is the sporadic humor and surprisingly insightful commentary about nepotism, poverty, and how first-generation immigrants must tirelessly work for the American dream. It's pretty clear here who is the sun and who is the hapless, rotating planet with vague signs of intelligent life. But what I really appreciated about this book was the level of depth in all other aspects just under the surface. The story also explores college stress and the whole college application race; how some teens are lucky and get in because of legacy, how some teens have to really 'standout', and how Black kids also face the pressure of being excellent following Obama's presidency. I have to say, I am such a fan of seeing more male friendships, where they openly share their emotions.

I always enjoyed his interactions with people, be it his parents, best friend Ming, Corrine, dog owners, or even his classmates. Her favorite genre to read is contemporary realistic fiction and she'll never say no to a graphic novel. I should really listen to my inner self when I dnf a book and not come back to it just because I'm seeing a lot of high ratings through my feed. It has an adorable romance and relatable final-year scenarios that always made me miss high school, with enough charm and vulnerabilities from our main character Henry that made this book stood out. Charming As A Verb is a great book for those trying to figure out the next steps after school—we've all been there. The protagonist and his love interest are dynamic and relatable — you’ll be rooting for them by the end of the story. To put it bluntly, like Corinne would, she's stunted in the social niceties department and could do with some "wine and dine" lessons. It's also easy to get a grasp of his family's dynamic, especially with his enigmatic Uncle Lionel whose advice to Henri when he fucked up was If you're going to risk everything, don't get caught. Oh, really adore Henri as a main character, he IS charming even though its not l through out the story but this is what makes him a well written character.
