About this deal

Mostly this place is full of dead Confederates, but there are a few forgotten starlets in the ground. I was invested in this story right from the opening scene, a flashback where the four main friends featured in the story sneak into a cemetery at night and break into a mausoleum. The dialogue: Right from the first page I found it to be grating, and it just didn’t get better unfortunately. I enjoyed all the characters in this novel as they all brought something unique to the novel, especially Erin, the main protagonist.

Grief and addiction are strong themes throughout, and it was interesting seeing these things being tackled in a horror novel. By the time we abandon campus and hop the wrought-iron fence surrounding Hollywood Cemetery, the four of us are all well on our way to peak fry. As I mentioned, the tone was well-depicted for the character he created, but it was not the best choice for a haunting and painful tale. An incorporeal creature inside of a solid object is hidden, requiring you to succeed at a DC 11 flat check when you target it. The book is peopled with rich, enigmatic characters whose pasts are shrouded in mystery and whose motives are close held secrets.Missed opportunity for a truly good book if the author had picked a lane but he was swervin all over the place. Amara and I are the only ones left on the street, so we plant our hands on Tobias’s scrawny ass and heave-ho him over.

Regardless, I will continue to read Chapman's work, he's definitely got the goods to produce an exceptionally horrific tale, this one just didn't quite knock it out of the park for me. So from the get-go here I am pretty invested in these characters, and then their journey gets so wild. He has this uncanny ability to rally the troops, enlist the rest of us to do just about whatever he wants—and what he wants most out of life is to gogogogo. But Silas is unable to manage on his own and just as Erin is finally moving on from him, Silas dies from an overdose and Erin’s life is completely changed.Don't get me wrong, this was a good horror read, it just didn't live up to his prior release, The Remaking, in my personal opinion. But the door to the land of the dead lets through more than just Silas—and, it turns out, it’s not so easily closed.
