I was wondering what kind of secrets Samson could be holding onto and was close to getting frustrated because so many times in books we see people keeping secrets and there is this back and forth with one character trying to keep secrets and the other trying to find them. Her father is absent, her mother is an addict, the trailer she lives in with her mother is in shambles, and she's working at McDonald's trying to make enough money just to eat.Hoover will rip your heart apart only to stitch it back together with the heartfelt scenes between Beyah and Samson. im so used to CH writing about adults that i was a little taken aback when i realised this is about two young people, right on the cusp of adulthood. I loved the main characters, their connection, their deep conversation, and how they were both the same even if it doesn’t seem like that. A 19-year-old Kentucky girl—the product of a one-night stand—finds her addict mother dead and ends up spending the summer in Texas with her father and his family. And I know most readers have strong feelings about Hoover (one way or another), but I still mostly think of her as the author who delivered this excellent read for me.
