Mindfulness has been a buzzword for quite a while now but that does not mean that people actually know what it it or even how to put it into action. So yes I do highly recommend these cards – they are a brilliant way to connect with your kids and encourage them to be more mindful and support for a truly wonderful charity along the way . Be Mindful of Monsters is a fantastic book to help children understand their emotions and why we have emotions. The story follows a child called Ezzy who feels uncomfortable with his feelings and they feel like big scary monsters but once his mum explains to him about why they're there and how to calm them down Ezzy manages to cope with the big emotions. After learning the concepts of “sitting with” or “holding” emotions, children can practice these skills with their pompom monster as a physical representation of their emotions. I think my son spoke more about his feelings but no impact on his behaviour and actually during a meltdown or a tantrum, he would not have the patience for the activities. I saw them more for bonding and communication between parent and child and getting children to discuss feelings and being kind to one another rather than connected to behaviour and actually there was no guidance on how to use the cards when dealing with perhaps challenging behaviour. Encouraging children to create sensory representations of their emotions using colors, sounds or other mediums is a common mindfulness intervention that enhances emotional awareness and facilitates the expression of feelings. In this simple activity, the client imagines what their emotions would be like if they were monsters. Not only does this help the client come to a stronger understanding of their inner world, it allows the therapist to begin assessing their client’s relationship to their feelings. As children process their thoughts and experiences over the course of treatment, we tend to see the way they regard their emotions shift naturally away from avoidance or resistance and toward acceptance. Repeating this directive again at a later stage of treatment can sometimes show that a client feels more compassion for the monsters or that their attitude toward their feelings has shifted. Not really. The activities seemed a bit old for my 4yo who was more interested in sorting the cards by colour than doing what was on them. Sometimes he got more involved but it was a bit patchy.

I think as she's only 4 she's still a little young for some of it. I think there were some nice cards that worked in my school setting for 5-6 year olds though.
