powerless has every popular romantasy trope possible. you may love that and feel fulfilled by that. i do enjoy certain tropes, but relying on tropes leaves a lot of world-building and natural character development to be desired. Across the deadly Scorches, and deep into the hostile city of Dor, Kai pursues the one person he wishes he didn’t have to. But in a city without Elites, the balance between the hunter and hunted shifts – and the battle between duty and desire is deadly.

There is plenty of twists and turns, somethings are predictable but honestly I didn't even care. It was such a fun read that kept me completely immersed that I didn't even care what was going on in my world or my life for the day and anytime a book can pull me in that deep - it's a GEM! You can handle yourself with the Elites.” The book is needlessly long, with self indulgent scene after scene that served little purpose to the plot or to further character growth. Yes, I know they're fun to write. But it became very repetitive and very boring very fast. The tropes are fun, knife to throat and whatever etc etc, but I have to wonder why there are like 4 different instances of it and why they're almost identical in purpose and tone. And, what's worse, they're very telling rather than showing. The author needed to kill some darlings, kill MANY darlings. The characters are nothing new. Take whatever recently published fantasy book dubbed as a ‘TikTok book’, and you will find the same 2D, boring, plain characters. And now I forever want her name on my lips and rolling off my tongue until I'm drunk on the taste and sound of it.

Untangling her long legs from where she sits, she effortlessly stands and phases right through the three-foot wall of our trash barricade without a second thought, and then she’s bounding toward me with so much hope in her eyes that you’d think I’ve offered her a real roof over her head and a warm meal. And though I can give her neither of those things, I do have something far better, in her opinion.
