One of the biggest complaints from the time was of terrible frame rate drops and stuttering, trouble with the audio and particularly the lip syncing; some even wrote that thinning out the fog in the second game revealed more of the game’s technical limitations that couldn’t be swept under the carpet. On the plus side, less fog did mean that textures became visible that couldn’t be seen in the original games, including some with clues about the various puzzles, so every cloud and all that. When I did eventually buy it I was more than happy with my experience, as it recreated the games that I remembered playing from my youth, and I do love a trip down Memory Lane.None of the mishaps I've described were game-ruining for me (note: I haven't played the collection on PS3, which reportedly comes off worse). But we really should expect better treatment for titles of this calibre. Nothing better sums up the sheer laziness of it all than a glaring typo scrolling past in the new credits.

I want to play through a series I'm enjoying, and a good game from the series will support latter games, even though you may not like them in their entireity. For goodness' sake I even played Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty through a couple of times and that IS a bunch of crap... And the controls even WORK on that one! In the context of today's games, the most arresting feature in both is the puzzle-solving. You will not be held by the hand in your journey around Silent Hill. Often you'll have little idea what to do or where to go next. Solutions can be obtuse, to say the least, and items essential to progress can be missed with dispiriting ease.

The game is a little different indeed, and is orientated towards fiddly and very specific timed combat. Which is shabby if you can't control it properly.That said, I guess playing the PC version made me appreciate the game even more because I felt it controlled even better than games like Resident Evil 5 and Dead Space without going over-the-top with action. Nyarlathotep - I've never been keen on mouse and keyboards for games. The only time I ever got that down was for Elite on the Amiga 600, everything after that seemed less than appropriate. Hehehe.
