This method of building skis is the most economical, and perfect for the lightweight, newer skier.

With so many options to choose from when it comes to choosing the right pair of skis for your children, we hope this article helps you to narrow down your options and choose a pair of skis that are absolutely perfect for your kids. Skiing can be a lifelong skill, allowing for great family time and the ability to see so many beautiful places. You want your children to be safe, but you also want to ensure that they are learning in a pair of skis that is best suited for them individually. Note: Most parents end up using a ski harness incorrectly! We’ve written all about how to use a ski harness the right way. This is the type of ski that is going to work on everything from groomers to trees to the terrain park. The skis actually accommodate kids who are a little older and taller too. You can get them in up to 157cm, which is longer than some other brands. It is strongly encouraged that a certified binding technician always installs, adjusts and tests your junior skier’s bindings every season. Alpine ski binding are the most important piece of safety equipment to help prevent injury on the slopes. Certified binding technicians have the special tool required to ensure that the binding releases once a specific amount of pressure is applied to the binding. Kids Skis Without Bindings Neither one of these are very expensive, but after teaching all 5 of our own kids to ski and hundreds of other kids when we were ski instructors (yes, that was each of our jobs in college), we’ve learned that these are the best tools you can buy.)

If you have a 1-year-old learning how to ski or two-year-old learning how to ski, chances are that these ski boots are going to be too big for them. Do not stress about this. You need to remember that when kids are really young all they’re really learning how to do is how to glide on the snow, how to stop, and how to do simple turns. For these skills a perfectly fitting ski boot is not necessary. If your child has extra small feet or you can’t find boots that are the right size for them you can always do what we do and shove a little bit of newspaper into the end of the boot for extra insulation and for a tighter fit. As well as increasing cardiovascular fitness and muscle growth, skiing is a thrilling snow sport that allows you to glide across snowy slopes with speed, grace, and dexterity. Getting the right skis for your build, experience, and terrain type can make all the difference to your performance and enjoyment on the slopes. With varying constructions, camber profiles, lengths, widths, sidecuts, and flex patterns, you must ensure you buy the right skis to match your ski style. Skis with a softer flex pattern are good for beginners, while stiffer flexes provide more response for advanced skiers. If you're unsure what you're looking for or want some extra help making that final nail-biting decision, why not pop into your nearest store today and chat with one of our in-store experts about all things ski? Many kids skis that you will find have bindings that are included with the skis. This is always the recommended route to go, for simplicity and compatibility. Kids skis with bindings never need to have the bindings removed to be re-drilled for proper fitting of the boots. The bindings only need to be slid into the appropriate place for that particular child’s boots, and have the ability to be moved when your child changes boots without compromising the integrity of the ski. If your child is a more experienced skier that is capable of linking parallel turns it is better to lean towards the longer side (up to their eyebrows). If you have a newer, less experienced skier

If you don’t want to spend a fortune on resort hot chocolate, carry an insulated bottle (this bottle has NEVER leaked on us), and bring your own. Also, if you haven’t tried this hot cocoa, it really might change your life. Planning on skiing with a toddler? Read all about my top tips for teaching toddlers to ski, the best age to teach kids to ski, as well as 9 secrets to skiing with toddlers and actually enjoying it. Skiing presents an entirely new set of distractions so getting your child to focus and look where they need to is huge. Outside of those things, I consider anything else learned a bonus. If your child is about 13 or older (depending on their growth), consider an entry-level all-mountain ski. They are often of higher quality, and if you are a skiing family there is a good chance they will get used even if your child outgrows them.

Ski Instructors have often advised that the optimum time to start ski school is when your child has started school, when they are more used to taking instruction and have more stamina. So if you are taking your toddler or child skiing this year for the first time it really is worth taking the Hobbledehoo Ski Harness and let them get used to wearing heavy skis and have fun on the nursey slopes. This helps you teach your children the basics of skiing. The skiing harness is great for both teaching your child to ski and practising what they have learnt in ski school in the afternoons.

The Selection Process:

I’m an independent ski teacher in Tignes and Val d”Isère, France, i’ve taught all levels of skiing for 20 years. I have 3 children who all started on skis around their 1st birthday. With all my experience in teaching little skiers I’ve become an expert in getting children enjoying skiing as early as possible. As I always say, ‘If they can walk then they can ski'. Families come to me to book their little skiers private ski lessons sometimes before they are even born. I always explain to them that their ski journey starts at home before they even reach the ski pistes with me. I recommend that they buy plastic skis from Little Skiers and let their baby play with them and try them on around the house. Even if they only put them on for 2 minutes at a time, learning to walk and step around in plastic skis can really give them a head start for when they meet me on the ski pistes for their first ever ski on snow. One of the most important investments that you can make in skiing with your kids is good outerwear. For the last couple of years, our younger kids have been wearing Reima snowsuits and we’re nothing but impressed with them. They’re waterproof, super easy to get on and off (the easiest we’ve ever found), and are roomy while still keeping little ones warm. These are the snowsuits we recommend most for toddlers. They’re all incredible quality, are really waterproof, many have extra insulation in the bum area (since little ones sit down in the snow so much) and they’re the cutest things you’ll see. We seriously can’t get enough! This is one of the best values that you can buy in kids ski gear and equality is outstanding. If your kid has bigger feet, we highly recommend the Roces ski boots, otherwise, buy kids the best ski boot size you can find. Now before we dive into the specifics of the gear that I would like to recommend, I want to let you know that if you are skiing with a toddler it can sometimes be difficult to find gear that is small enough for them. Don’t stress too much about finding the perfect fit since kids this age are growing so incredibly fast. Most of the time the gear that you find will be a little bit too big for them – do not worry about it. Do the best you can and know that it’s likely that within a few months your child will grow into the gear that you buy them. The most determining factor when deciding what size ski your child should be in is their height. Since most children are height and weight proportionate any junior ski that falls between their eyebrows to their chin is acceptable.

Skis are more important than bindings. The binding can be adjusted to fit your child’s boot and ski, but the ski itself is where you should invest the money. Remember, they’re kids after all, and they probably don’t even know their right from their left, so introducing words like wedge and snowplow will just confuse them. Personally, using the words pizza and french fry are about as technical as I’ve ever gotten . Both of my girls have gone through their fair share of skis, especially when they first started out. We started them with the simplest and most basic pair, and gradually moved them up as their skill levels improved, their confidence grew, and ultimately, they grew. While you may have to look around a little bit harder to find gear that’s appropriate for their size do not despair. The gear is out there and it’s absolutely possible to get your toddler skiing. These skis are not for use on groomed pistes but are ideal for play areas and best of all at the bottom of ski lifts in green beginners areas or snow play areas. Teach them to hold the "pizza" shape and you can start basic turns as confidence builds. Buying kids skis with bindings is an easy option, as they are adjustable to fit different sizes of ski boots. If you choose children’s skis that don’t have bindings, then you must select bindings to fit the skis. Kids skis fall into five categories, which are almost a direct reflection of the adults skis. They are piste skis, all mountain skis, twin tip skis, freeride skis and race skis. Kids skis differ from adults skis as they come in shorter ski lengths and are made with lighter and softer materials. There are no specific girls skis or boys skis, but some classic colours are used to appeal to each gender. Other Ski Gear for Kids Choosing good ski boots for kids is hugely important and I can’t say enough good things about Roces Adjustable ski boots. They’re super affordable and will last your child though 6 sizes without sacrificing performance. Read our full review on Roces adjustable boots here. When our girls started skiing, we put them on tiny K2’s. One pair was all purple for my oldest, and my youngest had a pair with SpongeBob Squarepants graphics. Our kids were thrilled, as were we, since these hand-me-downs from a family friend saved us an investment in ski equipment. The Fischer Ranger lineup replaced the old favorites, the Fischer Stunners. The Ranger Team models are a good all-around ski that won’t break the bank, and we like their all-mountain abilities a little more than the lesser-priced Ranger Jr.
