Lettura scorrevole ed affatto faticosa, si incontrano tantissimi personaggi e tantissime situazioni, ma per il tempo necessario, mai una parola di troppo viene spesa, mai una descrizione si dilunga più dello stretto necessario, e questo senza perdita di efficacia. Le pennellate con cui Singer delinea i personaggi, le comparse pure , sono talmente azzeccate che ti pare di vedere un fotogramma.

Altra similitudine: Simcha Meyer Ashkenazi è la fotocopia di Beppino Scacerni detto Coniglio Mannaro. Anzi, è possibile che Bacchelli, per creare il suo personaggio, si sia almeno in parte ispirato da qui.Un romanzo imponente, meraviglioso, pieno di tematiche e di pezzi di storia europea, scritto da una penna fluida che accompagna il lettore nei cunicoli di un quadro complesso, e riesce a guidarlo abilmente in ogni vicolo tortuoso.

The Broth­ers Ashkanazi was the first book that I.J. Singer pub­lished after arriv­ing in New York from War­saw in 1934. Its ambi­tion and range were unprece­dent­ed in Yid­dish lit­er­a­ture and it called forth com­par­isons to Tol­stoy. The story of the two brothers helps only to outline the historical time: when the first Germans started to arrive in Poland bringing work, the huge Jewish community that was at first very orthodox but slowly started to change while changing the period. So, from one side we have the orthodox Jews, bound to customs and tradition, and the younger Jews that started to be more openminded.

The beauty of 'The Brothers Ashkenazi' lies in its ambitious purpose. I.J. Singer here draws an excellent and ever-detailed picture of Lodz between the end of the 19th century and the end of World War I. Among the forces at work in town to shape it as an industrial Sodom and Gomorrah there is a thriving Jewish community and a prosperous German enclave.

Out of mere curiosity, I tried to look for Israel Joshua Singer's books in either the Italian or the English translation, but I was never able to find any of them in bookshops, libraries and second hand bookstalls. Even though he was born in Poland and spent most of his life in the US, Isaac Bashevis Singer wrote in Yiddish, his mother tongue. He died at the impressive age of 88 and gained all the honours and the fame he deserved.
