About this deal

Weight: 220g (7.8 oz.) for the TC-1.4x, 265g (9.4 oz.) for the TC-2.0x. Both TCs are massive affairs with fully metal bodies and no moving mechanical parts. The F TCs are 190g and 330g resp. [0] The first super-telephoto zoom lens in the NIKKOR Z lineup that covers a focal length range from 100 to 400mm.

Using your manual focus Zeiss lenses with CPU (ZF.2 line), such as the Milvus or Otus series should work fine and older Zeiss as well, but these non-cpu lenses have limited functionality (e.g. no aperture indication in camera and no aperture control on the camera). To our knowledge, Zeiss have no plans to provide native Z series mount lenses as is.This firmware update is performed with an FTZ mount adapter attached to a camera. See “Compatible Cameras” for a list of compatible cameras. According to Nikon the following Nikkor F-mount lens types are compatible with Nikon Z7, Z7ii, Z6, Z6ii, Z5 and Z50 using the FTZ mount adapter. Currently over 90 Nikkor lenses are fully compatible with the Z series using the FTZ. And, in case you wondered, no, you cannot use the FTZ on your Nikon 1 camera, nor 1 Nikkor glass with it. The FTZ adapter is for the Z-series cameras only, making it possible to use F-mount Nikkors. Type of lens In short, all the newest AF-I, AF-S and AF-P lenses work fine with Nikon's FTZ adapter, while there is no autofocus with any other lenses, and especially no autofocus with older AF and AF‑D lenses, many of which Nikon still sells new today. My Z7 does not show the effects of distortion correction as I'm composing as the EOSR does, and worse, the Z7 often only partially corrects the distortion of lenses on the FTZ adapter.

There are no electronic manual focus aids other than Focus Peaking and Magnifiers. The selected focus area always stays red and there are no arrows or dots at the bottom of the finder. Users of the Z6II and other Z-series cameras released in or after November, 2020, should install this update if the camera displays a message prompting them to update the FTZ mount adapter firmware. The SB-400 is the ultimate mirrorless flash. It works flawlessly with the Zf, even turning on and off with the Zf's power switch. Teleconverters (“converters” or “TC’s”) are a relatively inexpensive way of extending the focal length, and hence the range, of an existing lens. However, their usage comes at a price in performance terms. Typically, AF speed may be reduced, and any tendency of the lens to “hunt” may increase. Image quality (resolution and contrast) is likely to be degraded somewhat. Lastly, an inevitable result of using any converter is a lessening of light transmission, and hence a darker viewfinder:

Note that some of the “fully compatible” lenses may still require a firmware update before they work with the FTZ adapter without any issues. If you buy any of these lenses new, Tamron has likely already installed the most recent firmware, but if you’ve had the lens for years, you might need to send it off for an update (or use Tamron’s tap-in console). NIKON Z7 + TamronSP 90mm F/2.8 MACRO VC (Model F017) @ 90mm, ISO 160, 1/1000, f/6.3, manual focus due to partial incompatibility Tokina Brand Lenses Take a look at the below comparison that we performed on the Nikon D850 with the Nikon F 35mm f/1.8G ED lens, along with the Nikon Z7 and the same lens using the FTZ adapter:

The shortest 3 rotation angle of 80 degrees in its class for the zoom ring enables users to rotate the zoom ring from the wide-angle position to the telephoto position in just one motion, without adjusting lens holding. A pretty impressive difference! And if you’re wondering whether you can achieve the same results by simply cropping: Yes, you can. To achieve the same angle of view of the TC-2.0x you simply need to crop the image without TC by a factor of two. But then you’re losing 75% of pixels and end up with an 11MP photo instead of the original 45MP. Which might well be enough for the intended print or viewing size: a modern 4k Monitor only has 8MP and printing an 11MP photo at a very fine pixel-density of 240 dpi still yields a print of 17×11 in. or 44 x 29cm. Nikon has been steadily adding to its Z lens lineup, and after just a few years, it is already a very good system. Gone are the days when Nikon only had three lenses for the Z7!The adapter only works properly (autofocuses) with Nikon's newest lenses, which are those with built-in AF motors ( AF-I, AF-S and AF-P). With all other lenses autofocus does not work. AF and AF‑D lenses become manual focus only.

These are 50-year-old lenses that Nikon warns may have mechanical interference and not be able to mount. Go ahead and try — carefully — and see what happens with them. If they mount, and most of them just might, you'll get VR, metering and A and M exposure modes:

While my Canon EOS R expertly corrects distortion in all my old Canon EF lenses introduced since about 1990, and even shows me these corrections live in the viewfinder as I'm composing, my Nikon Z7 is inferior. You’ll notice that the Nikon Z mount has the greatest angle of incidence of any system. That’s why we were not especially surprised at Photography Life to see just how good Nikon’s Z lenses are; the lens designers are working with a very flexible starting point. It’s a safe bet that Nikon’s future Z lenses will continue to set high standards in image quality, weight, or both. Size: The diameter of both TCs is 72mm (2.8 in.). The length is 19mm (0.7in.) resp. 33mm for the TC-1.4x and TC-2.0x – not counting the protrusion at the front which extends into the mounted lens. The F TCs are 64mm in diameter and 25mm resp. 46mm in length. [0] Far better than DSLRs, using the TC-20E teleconverter (and newer -II and -III versions of the TC-E series), you still get full-frame autofocus and it's just as fast! With DSLRs AF got slow and buggy and only worked with the center sensor, while with mirrorless you don't lose anything.
