Now Gabby grabs my hand for a moment and squeezes it, keeping her eye on the road. “I’m proud of you that you’re taking control of your life,” she says. “Just by getting on the plane this morning, you’re getting your life together.” Life is long and full of an infinite number of decisions. I have to think that the small ones don’t matter, that I’ll end up where I need to end up no matter what I do. My fate will find me. So I decide to..." I’m not scared of flying. I’m scared of sharks, hurricanes, and false imprisonment. I’m scared that I will never do anything of value with my life. But I’m not scared of flying. I watched as Gabby’s pixelated face frowned. “I told you he was married,” she said, her patience wearing thin. “I told you this three weeks ago. I told you that you need to stop this. Because it’s wrong. And because that is some woman’s husband. And because you shouldn’t allow a man to treat you like a mistress. I told you all of this.”

I didn’t know he was married at first. And for some reason, I thought that meant it was OK. He never admitted he was married. He never wore a wedding ring. He didn’t even have a paler shade of skin around his ring finger, the way magazines tell you married men will. He was a liar. A good one, at that. And even though I suspected the truth, I thought that if he never said it, if he never admitted it to my face, then I wasn’t accountable for the fact that it was true. I laugh. “Well, we’ll be cutting it close, I think,” I say to him. “Gabby says there is some bar in Hollywood that we should go to tonight. She invited a whole bunch of friends from high school, so I can see everybody again. She’s calling it a housewarming. Which makes no sense. I don’t know.” You need to cut this crap out, Hannah. I’m serious. You are a wonderful person who has a lot to offer the world. But this is wrong. And you know it.” He still, all these years later, shines brighter to me than other people. Even after I got over him, I was never able to extinguish the fire completely, as if it’s a pilot light that will always remain small and controlled but very much alive.

Carrie Soto is Back

Reid knows exactly how to play it to make her novels surprising, warm and funny. I'm starting to wonder if part of her charm is that - at least with both The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Maybe in Another Life - she lures us into asking the wrong questions. It oddly makes the answers more satisfying when we figure out we were wrong. This reading group guide for Maybe in Another Life includes an introduction, discussion questions, and ideas for enhancing your book club. The suggested questions are intended to help your reading group find new and interesting angles and topics for your discussion. We hope that these ideas will enrich your conversation and increase your enjoyment of the book. I get it, though, her talent probably needed time to bloom and a lot of things can happen in a short period of time.

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo ; now with a bonus conversation with Julia Whelan and Taylor Jenkins Reid, recorded exclusively for this edition. Oh, by the way, we also got cheating mofos in this book. All the books I’ve read by Reid has at least one man cheating and I just find that quite interesting. Hmmmmm, no more comments. Leal, Samantha (7 July 2015). "Author and TV Writer Taylor Jenkins Reid Is All the Inspiration You Need to Change Things Up in Your Career" . Retrieved 21 February 2018.Author Taylor Jenkins Reid based this idea on her love for the movie Sliding Doors. Unlike Sliding Doors Reid wanted this story to explore that there could be different decisions that lead you to different places and that maybe there really is not one person that is your soulmate. Maybe in Another Life is an examination on faith, choices, soulmates and that there are many ways that we can be happy. So we have all thought this, but I’m gonna ask anyway. Have you ever wondered what would have happened if you had made another decision than the one you previously made? And are you sometimes so adamant that if you had made that other decision, everything would have surely been better? Well, this book challenges that thinking a lot. What I got from this book is that no matter which decision you take, some things are going to remain constant in your life. Yes, somethings would have changed, but how sure are we that it was going to be better? Taylor Jenkins Reed’s overall writing style is simple and not as sophisticated as her later publications – not a criticism, just and observation (suitable for the setting and characters, perhaps). At first, the writing is almost report-like, then later, things become more conversational and finally complexities enter the plot. One thing about Reed’s work is – some plot points are predictable/expected and some are definitely not. The conclusion is interesting and aptly, both open-ended and fixed.

I have yet to encounter a TJR book that hasn't left a mark on my soul or one I didn't like, and Maybe In Another Life is no exception. I’d much rather be depicted with my dark brown hair and my light green eyes, but I understand that you can’t really do much with color when you’re drawing with a Bic pen. While on the surface, the novel may seem to focus on which man Hannah will end up with, there are several types of love explored in Maybe in Another Life. Discuss these as a group. Which of the many relationships depicted was your favorite? How did they change and grow in each storyline? The 1998 movie Sliding Doors (starring Gwyneth Paltrow) takes a similar premise as Maybe in Another Life, and examines how one woman’s life differs based on whether or not she catches a train. Watch the film as a group, and discuss how its portrayal of two possible outcomes for one woman’s life differs from Hannah’s story. Are the two projects making the same point or contrasting ones?
