About this deal

PB2 powdered peanut butter contains dramatically fewer calories than traditional peanut butter since most of the calorie-rich fats have been removed. Unfortunately, up to 80% of teens and adults fail to meet the recommended daily intake of vitamin E ( 18, 19).

Peanut butter is not a significant source of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D or K, but it is a good source of vitamin E. Two tablespoons provide 14% of the RDI ( 1).

Blend It

Only PB2 and PBfit (of the brands we tried) suggest reconstituting into peanut butter. They won the taste test too which is probably due to the added sugar and salt giving it a more real peanut butter flavor. PB2 Powdered peanut butter may be a good fit for people looking for easy ways to reduce their calorie intake or for those on restricted-calorie diets.

While the nutrition facts label for PB2 does not contain information on vitamin E content, analysis of a similar product, peanut flour, can provide a comparison. Why is peanut butter powder so popular? Bottom line: fewer calories and less fat with actual peanut butter flavor. And it has between 6-8 g protein per serving (brand dependent). Two tablespoons of natural peanut butter provide about 190 calories, while two tablespoons of PB2 provide just 45 calories ( 1, 2). Step 2: Next, mix the cookie dough. In a large bowl, mix 4 tablespoons of PBfit powder with water until smooth.

The main ways you'd use the powder is blending, baking or mixing into other recipes. Any way you'd use regular peanut butter you could use peanut butter powder. As an example 2 tablespoons of peanut butter is 190 calories with 16 grams of fat. By comparison PB2, probably the most popular of the peanut butter powders, weighs in at 60 calories and 1.5 grams of fat for the same amount. Since most of the fat has been removed from powdered peanut butter, there is concern that the fat-soluble vitamins are lost as well. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that functions as an antioxidant in the body. Antioxidants help fight the damaging effects of free radicals to reduce inflammation and cellular damage ( 15, 16).

Seem too good to be true? We too were suspicious and researched three popular brands to get to the bottom of all the hype. And we are now sold on it. Make a variety of peanut butter powders including one that's sugar-free sweetened with a monk fruit blend (it's only 10 fewer calories than the organic version we tested) However, research has shown that regularly consuming peanuts does not contribute to weight gain, even though nuts are a rich source of calories and fat ( 5). PB2 also contains added salt, though less than the amount found in most types of traditional salted peanut butter — 94 mg versus 147 mg per serving ( 21). Peanut butter powder is made from roasted peanuts that are pressed to remove most of the oil. This removes most of the fat calories leaving the peanut flavor and plant protein. However, since PB2 only contains one gram of total sugar per serving, it is unlikely to be a significant source of added sugar unless you eat it in very large quantities ( 2). Sift in the remaining ½ cup of peanut butter powder. Or mix it in and AVOID LUMPS AT ALL COST! It looks similar to your batter before the egg is added but makes a huge difference (trust me, I've tried 😂) PB2 is also available in chocolate flavor, which is made by blending cocoa powder, sugar and salt with the peanut powder ( 22).

Yet, keep in mind that commercial peanut butter often contains added vegetable fats. For this reason, powdered peanut butter is probably better for your waistline. Summary Defatted peanut flour, which is made by grinding up defatted peanuts, contains zero grams of fat and no vitamin E ( 17). This was the only of peanuts-only brands we tried. We like the clean ingredients and integrity of the company overall. We feel this is best for mixing into foods for the nutritional value versus making actual peanut butter. The unsaturated fats found in peanuts may also help the body burn more calories while at rest, but this effect has not been replicated in all studies. More research is needed ( 7, 8).Whether you are looking for more protein for a smoothie or post workout shakes, love peanut butter and can't work it into a low calorie eating plan, peanut butter powder is the answer. For this reason, traditional peanut butter may be a better choice for those not already consuming foods high in vitamin E like nuts, nut oils, fish, avocados, wheat germ or wheat germ oil ( 20).
