Many parents start to consider potty training when their child is around two or two and a half years old (ERIC, 2010). Yet because there is no set age, it all comes down to whether you think your little one is showing signs they are ready to potty train (NHS Choices, 2017). What are the signs my child is ready for potty training? Encourage them to follow a regular toilet routine: sitting on the toilet or potty after every meal and using a footstool to support their feet. If your pup has been willing to void in her crate the crate is probably too big and probably hasn't been well enough cleaned. They should always progress not revert. Your child will need to be physically ready to control their bladder and bowels for potty training. Them wanting to be clean and dry is a must for achieving potty training success. It can be hard to know when to start potty training. Keeping an eye out for the common signs of potty training readiness will give you a better idea of when to try it. Wait until your child is showing the following signs of readiness and you’ll find potty training easier, with less accidents. Five common signs of potty training readiness:

Of the early years staff across the UK that the Children’s Bowel and Bladder Charity ERIC and NDNA surveyed, 68% said they felt that over the last five years, children were being potty trained at a later age.Paper Projects have teamed up with Bing to produce this fabulous reusable reward chart. Postponing the potty by a year increases the UK’s use of throwaway nappies by 970 million a year, the research found. They also need to be able to sit on the potty and get up from it when they’re done, and follow your instructions. Getting ready for potty trainingTry to stay calm and don’t shout or punish your child if they have a soiling accident. Remember: they are not doing it on purpose. For potty training to go well, your child needs a consistent approach to help them learn what they need to do whether they're at home or in childcare. Using a potty is a new skill for your child to learn. It's best to take it slowly and go at your child's pace. Being patient with them will help them get it right, even if you sometimes feel frustrated.

Stay positive and give your child gentle reminders about using the potty regularly. My child's about to start school and still isn't dry Regular, short periods without wearing a nappy or pull-up can help prepare your child for how it will feel when they stop using them completely. Let your child have some nappy off time for up to 30 minutes after they've done a wee or poo. This will help them get used to not wearing it, without having an accident. Make friends with other parents-to-be and new parents in your local area for support and friendship by seeing what NCT activities are happening nearby. Try not to worry. Remind yourself that sooner or later, your child will want to be dry for their own sake. If they start to see potty training as a battle with you, it'll be much harder. Although most learn this between the ages of 3 and 5, up to 1 in 5 children aged 5 sometimes wet the bed. When to start potty trainingAs soon as you see that your child knows when they're going to pee, encourage them to use their potty. If your child slips up, just mop it up and wait for next time. It takes a while for them to get the hang of it.

If you do not make a fuss when they have an accident, they will not feel anxious and worried, and are more likely to be successful the next time. Put them in clothes that are easy to change and avoid tights and clothes with zips or lots of buttons. The increasing age of potty training is of great concern. There is a clear link between later potty training and bladder and bowel health conditions, which are not being identified early and so become more problematic and potentially chronic,” said Juliette Rayner, head of ERIC, The Children’s Bowel & Bladder Charity. To make this process easier for you both, follow our evidence-based 3 step Let's Go Potty approach. Keep the potty in the bathroom. If that's upstairs, keep another potty downstairs so your child can reach the potty easily wherever they are. The idea is to make sitting on the potty part of everyday life for your child. Start conversations about potty practice as soon as your child can sit up. Settings may regard potty training as something to attempt when the child is older; share this information so they too can see the benefits of potty practice.Make sure it’s a good time for you as well as your child. It’s best to avoid doing it at a time when there are any big changes or disruptions to your child’s or family’s routine. ERIC. (2010) Potty training.
