Nicola came to my desk and was sort of laughing about Tuesday’s dramas. Nicola had had a few arguments with Helen too. Nicola said “I heard you were kneeling on the floor cleaning Tara’s boots! Do you have a foot fetish or something?” Tara said “I’m kind of OCD when it comes to my boots and shoes and my clothes. I try not to get them dirty but sometimes it’s unavoidable, and I can’t stand it if my clothes and footwear aren’t clean.”

Tara stood up and said “OK. But don’t worry about cleaning my boots. They don’t really need cleaning. I just wanted to provoke Helen into losing her temper.” Tara had a little smile on her face, and said “Thank you! I’ll keep that in mind. I’m sure there will be the odd occasion or two when your cleaning services might come in very handy.” So I wiped the white rubber sole of Tara’s sneaker. Tara sat watching me, but kept glancing over at the doorway to reception. It was pretty obvious Tara was hoping Helen would catch me cleaning her sneakers. Tara sat drinking her coffee, and watching me wipe the soles of her sneakers, while looking hopefully at the reception doorway.So I began drying Tara’s boot, surprised that still none of the other staff had come to my work area to see what all the yelling had been about.

Tara turned to face me and held her hands out at waist level, pointing down at her feet with both index fingers. Tara said “There were lots of puddles in the carpark again this morning. Would you mind?” One funny thing this week... there’s been things going missing from my desk. My stapler went missing on Tuesday. My hole punch went missing on Wednesday. Wednesday also saw all of my paperclips go missing. Twice, my desk calendar was flipped onto the wrong day. And pens were vanishing at an alarming rate...much more than they normally go missing from my desk. And on Friday I went to use a pencil, only to find the point had been snapped off. And when I grabbed my other pencil, it had also been snapped. And to top it off, my pencil sharpener was missing. On Thursday, Tara arrived at work and came over to my desk to say good morning. Then she said “You know how you cleaned my shoes on Monday? Well... Can I ask you a really big favour?”But every cloud has a silver lining, and for me that silver lining is a young lady named Tara (although most of the other staff don’t like her at all!). So... as you can see, Tara is in the habit of taking me for granted when it comes to making coffees and running errands. She also gets me to carry anything to her office if it’s a little bit heavy. And she often sits at my desk asking me lots of questions about the company and its policies and procedures. If I don’t know the answer, Tara asks me to find out and let her know the answer. In addition to all of that, Helen seems to always be fighting with either her mum, or her sister, and quite often is fighting with both of them at the same time (we hear her arguing with them on the phone).
