Their overlapping artistic careers, which spanned from the turn of the 20th century until the end of the First World War, coincided with a radical rebirth of Viennese culture. The dynamic clash between forces of modernity and tradition in Vienna generated a spirit of invention that revitalised not only the fine and decorative arts, but also architecture, music, literature and science, producing extraordinary innovators in every field. Sigmund Freud, dramatists Arthur Schnitzler and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, composer Arnold Schönberg, and architects Josef Hoffmann and Adolf Loos are among those who transformed Vienna into a melting pot of new ideas. Fired by the city’s café culture with its lively exchange of ideas, Viennese modernism took on a unique, multi-faceted form that was expressed most fully in the artistic ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk or “total work of art”, fusing all aspects of artistic expression into a grand symphonic unity.

[23] Legacy [ edit ] Max Oppenheimer, 1910 When his case was heard by a court, the allegations of enticement and kidnapping were withdrawn, but the artist was found to be guilty of displaying pornographic paintings in a place where minors may see them. In court, the judge used a candle flame to burn one of the offensive artworks. The 21 days he had previously spent in detention were considered, and he was condemned to three further days in prison. Schiele gets the largest section, reflecting the Leopold Museum’s world-beating collection of his works. In fact, his elevated status in the art world owes much to the efforts of Rudolf und Elisabeth Leopold, whose collection led to the establishment of the museum. And not only in London. In Zürich at almost the same time, the Kunsthaus has a major Schiele exhibition, but with a fascinating twist which pairs Schiele with that leading contemporary painter of the nude, Jenny Saville RA. Further afield, Schiele’s birthplace, the small town of Tulln not far from Vienna, has a Schiele season whose focus is an exhibition of his earlier and later work. Almost incredibly, in New York, the Neue Galerie, a specialist museum of early modern Austrian and German art, also has a major Schiele show this autumn, concentrating on his portraits. I have no idea why all these shows have come together – there is no significant anniversary – but it is certainly a tribute to Schiele’s incredible productivity in his tragically brief life from 1890 to 1918. In fairness, this is only partly due to prudery. At precisely the moment when the socio-sexual revolutions of the 1960s enabled us to see past the eroticism of Schiele to the artist beyond, the British art establishment finally caught up with modernism and went overboard for it. Schiele just seemed to have no place in the dominant narrative of modern art, running from Ce?zanne to Cubism to abstract art, never mind the sex.

More than any other image, the self-portrait declares the artist as the subject of the work of art, and the work of art as the means by which we might know him (my use of the masculine pronoun is deliberate here), in all his creative, spiritual and sexual torment.
Not much else is known about her except that she had modeled for Gustav Klimt and may have been one of his lovers. Schiele and Wally traveled to the little town in southern Bohemia to escape what they viewed as the cramped Viennese atmosphere. Krumau was the hometown of Schiele’s mother, and it now houses a Schiele museum. Schiele’s workshop became a meeting spot for Neulengbach’s delinquent youth since it was in the capital. Schiele’s lifestyle infuriated the town’s residents, and he was arrested in April 1912 for courting a girl of 13, who was under the consenting age of 14 at the time. When the authorities arrived at Schiele’s studio to arrest him, they confiscated over a hundred sketches that they deemed obscene.
