About this deal

Changing from one roller to another is fairly straightforward and can be done by using the supplied Allen key which can be attached to the handle for safe keeping and to keep it handy.

If you have a small yard, a handheld aerator is a great affordable option—this type of tool is generally much easier to store and can get into tight places where a tow-behind aerator cannot go. We like the Yard Butler Lawn Coring Aerator because it is both lightweight and durable. Like many handheld aerators, it does require physical effort and only covers a small area at a time, but when used, it can loosen the compacted soil and dethatch your lawn, so vital nutrients can get through. The metal prongs that do the digging could maybe be a little longer but as they are they do what they’re supposed to if you remember to wet the soil first. There isn’t much to talk about design wise with these lawn aerators. They consist of a solid plastic sole, 5 straps to hold them on your feet, and 13 nails on each foot to do the aerating. They arrive in pieces and need to be assembled but it’s a very simple task, especially if you use a decent spanner instead of the useless one that is supplied by Abreome. Loosening the soil, improving the supply of oxygen, and creating good drainage creates a good environment for new grass seed, whilst benefitting any existing lawn.

Lawn Aerator Sandals or Shoes

Of course, there are exceptions. If the lawn is part of new construction and the ground has been compacted by all of the equipment used during building, you may need aeration to ensure water reaches the roots of freshly laid sod. Roots (usually) naturally grow AWAY from the sunlight. So, if you aerate your soil, sunlight reaches the roots through the natural pores in the soil. This encourages the roots to burrow down into the ground, making the root system deeper. Aeration for irrigation Spiked aerator shoes require a bit of getting used to, and some leg muscle as well, to pull the spikes out of the ground. But they can be a good way to cover small areas. You just need to be careful not to wear the shoes on any hard surfaces, as the spikes can bend and break. These shoe aerators won’t create as deep a hole as other types.

If you are looking for a tow-behind aerator and have sandy or loamy soil, the Agri-Fab Spike Aerator is a great choice. We love that it has 10 star-shaped tines that help penetrate compacted soil. Plus, it includes a weight tray that can hold up to 100 pounds if needed. Thanks to its universal hitch, your lawn tractor or UTV can do most of the work for you. And when not in use, the hitch folds up for easier storage. There are anti-slip pads on the part of the shoe that connects to the sole of your own shoes, helping to prevent slipping.Wait until your grass plants have established a deep root system – so wait until year two before you aerate a new lawn for the first time. Is aerating the same as scarifying? Sarel rollers areseveral hundreds of pounds but are easy to use and highly beneficial. However, as they only open up the surface of the lawn, it is lawn aeration in the loosest sense, and does not replace spiking or coring. Powered Machinery One of the most efficient (and fun?) ways to aerate your lawn, these Ohuhu Lawn Aerator Shoes are wearable aerators. These spiked aerator ‘shoes’ attach to the bottom of your regular shoes using velcro straps. Simply walk around the garden, and the spikes at the bottom will be pushed down into the soil under your weight. Manual rolling drum – ideally you want a good number of metal spikes on the drum to create plenty of holes – as a guide, 27 spikes will give you about 180 spikes per square metre. The spikes should also be at least 5cm long to ensure they penetrate the ground deeply. This is a 2-in-1 aerator and scarifier and comes with both a 48 claw aerator roller, and a 20 blade, stainless steel spike drum for scarifying. Both are ball bearings mounted for smooth operation and longevity.

Lawn aerators improve the appearance of grass over time by penetrating the ground and allowing air and water deeper into the soil. As a result, the roots have better access to nutrients and fertilisers. Larger gardens will probably require you to get a rolling aerator, whether that is electric or push powered. You could use aerator nail shoes for any sized garden as long as you are prepared to do the exercise. Type of soil All lawns are not created equal, so different turfs need different levels of care and aeration to stay in tip-top shape. If you want to have a decent looking patch, this process really can’t be ignored. These types of aerators are best suited to those with small gardens as they do require a bit of manual work, but are well worth it because they are cheaper than electric/petrol machines. You can either use a normal garden pitch fork or hollow tine pitch fork to make the holes (with the pitch fork you’ll get little spikes in the ground, whereas with the hollow tines you’ll dig up plugs of turf). Hollow tines will open up the soil much more effectively so if your soil is heavily compacted or if you want to do a more thorough job then it is better to go with this option. Well-trodden paths help compact the soil, which means that there’s probably areas of your lawn that are heavily compacted and parts that are less affected. This hollow tine aerator helps revitalise the lawn by removing 2 x 1.27 cm plugs of earth each time it is pulled from the ground. The hollow tines pull out plugs of earth that are fairly sizeable, measuring 8.9 cm long. As a result, compacted soil is loosened and air, water and fertiliser can all reach further down into the ground. The tool you use is also an essential factor to consider when deciding on your intended aeration intervals. If you’re aerating between March and November, you can use any aerator you please to aerate your turf, from rolling lawn to garden fork.

Simply push the rolling aerator up and down your lawn in a similar pattern you would with a manual lawn mower, you won’t achieve as dense spikes as you would with aerator shoes but you can cover the lawn a second time if you want to be more thorough.

One of the best things about manual aerators is how little faff they are to use. This manual aerator can be taken out of the box and used instantly, there’s no cable to worry about nor complex assembly. It’s very lightweight and easy to store. Plus, it makes it easy to work freely around the garden with no power cord to worry about.
