About this deal

Chocolate brown is darker and richer than walnut, but the two colors share a lot of similarities. In walnut wood, the darker streaks can be described as chocolate brown, while the lighter streaks have more of a tan color.

Finishing: There always seems to be magic in applying that first coat of finish to any project, but oiling walnut is an are-inspiring spectacle every time. Heartwood colors vary from lighter golden yellow to reddish brown with dark brown streaks, and the sapwood is yellowish. New Guinea Walnut is known as the Pacific walnut, Lamyo, or Paldao. It is native to Southeast Asia. The mature tree is 100–120 ft (30–37 m) tall and has a 5–7 ft (1.5–2.1 m) trunk diameter.

Workability: Easy to work with straight and regular grain. Planer tear-out can sometimes be a problem with irregular or figured grain. Glues, stains, and finishes nicely.

However, when it comes to particular wood tones or colours these do change over time. In the case of walnut, this was once a fairly popular finish. According to Google AdWords, searches for walnut bathroom furniture have dropped from around 220 searches a month in 2019 to just 110 in 2022 on average, a drop of 50%. I sat down and started mixing paints and creating samples like the DIY version of a mad scientist. Before I knew it I had created over 3 dozen different stain samples and there were even more little bottles of paint scattered all over my kitchen table. Who knew this would be my best option to de-stress during the craziness of this year? If you are starting with raw wood, you don’t need a primer. If you are starting with a surface that you know was painted with latex paint, you don’t need a primer. If you aren’t sure of the paint or have a stained surface, you definitely need a primer to prevent bleed-through and to help the paint adhere. I like to use a quart of Zinnser Bullseye 123 but if your piece is laminate or veneer, go with something a little more hardcore like Zinsser Cover Stain. The primer is only if you are doing a piece that is previously finished and that finish is not latex paint. As I detail in my post A Better Alternative to Chalk Paint, you can skip the base coat on pieces that need a primer by getting your primer tinted to be the same color as the base coat would have been. There is suitable wood for making furniture. Heartwood is lighter pale brown to dark chocolate with darker brown streaks, whereas sapwood is almost white.

From a paint perspective, those walnut tones offered tend to be more of a creamier, brown colour providing a more neutral look. Additionally, its subtle colors have a calming effect on any room, helping to make it feel inviting and comfortable while still maintaining its sophisticated vibe. If you are unsure if the piece has been waxed, I’d use a primer just in case. The last thing you want to do is use this faux stain process only to have it chip or even peel off later because of the wax underneath. Can You Use the Faux Paint Stain Method with Chalk Paint? As walnut is a dark colour, it pairs well with lighter colours. However, if you are looking to keep your space adaptable, then neutral colours such as white, magnolia and creams are complementary colours to walnut finished items. Dark and Moody
