The trio descend into deep caverns and discover a tunnel system leading to the planet's center. On their way they find among other things also prehistoric animals like some dinosaurs. They have to deal with lightning storms, endure torrential floods, volcanic eruptions, turtles, a big gorilla, and discover a forest of giant mushrooms, but not the lost city of Atlantis as happens in the classic novel. In 1993, NBC aired a made-for-TV film version with a cast including John Neville, F. Murray Abraham and Kim Miyori. The film used the title and general premise of Verne's novel, but had its heroes carry out the journey in an earth-penetrating machine borrowed from Burroughs. [5]

Hannah Asgeirsson is cringeworthy as the love interest/ guide figure, a character it is impossible to like or even find interesting. The storyline is pretty predictable, and in terms of story and set pieces, 'Journey' doesn't really offer anything that hasn't been done before, and often better. First off, let me say that I'm VERY glad I saw this movie in 3D. If I hadn't, I might have walked out. The instant strength of this film that comes to mind is the great use of the 3D technology. It has plenty of surprises, and it doesn't over do it at all. HOWEVER, this does not excuse the blatant cheesiness, stupid typical one liners from Brendan Fraser, nor the underutilization of such a fantastic concept.

I can't quite put my finger on why but at no point did I find myself even remotely engrossed into this. The cast are passable, the sfx are ahead of their time and the material for the most part is okay. Sadly it just isn't strung together very well and makes for less than enjoyable viewing. There's the script devices to tease, and the images. The story is pretty obvious, capable, strong woman. Desirable, resourceful. There's some competition between the adult Frasier and the 13 year old, which I am sure was engineered and thoroughly tested. More subtle are the images: the vaginal flower that threatens. The fish that threatens to bite her tightly clad butt. The image of her thrusting to drive the train through an exhilarating ride. The subsequent episode where she negotiates through a stormy sea with snakelike monsters threatening. Do not suppose any of this is accidental. To be honest, I've never heard of the 1950s movie based on the book by Jules Verne (I've read it by the way) nor the other adaptations that came out at that time and I've regretted not seeing this in theaters, but after watching this nearly three times in a row on a DVD copy, I actually thought this is a pretty good.

The reviewers of "Journey" are probably all correct: the logic is spotty, the premise is silly, and the requirement of the audience to suspend disbelief is beyond a typically successful film. However, despite all of that, I liked it! I went to see it because in my small town the offerings are rather slim, and I had seen everything else (is it me, or did this summer's films seem a bit clichéd and lame?). artist: creature and animation, Frantic Films (as Jelma Boskma) / lead creature modeler: Frantic Films Göteborg's widow, Carla, who initially believed Lindenbrook was trying to capitalize on her deceased husband's work, learns the truth. She provides the equipment and supplies that her husband had accumulated, including much sought after Ruhmkorff lamps, but only on the condition that she accompanies them to protect her husband's reputation. Lindenbrook grudgingly agrees. Hans and Gertrud also join the new expedition. Caedmon Records released an abridged recording of Journey to the Center of the Earth read by James Mason, in the 1960s.

Oh how dreadfully, dreadfully wrong I was. "Journey to the Center of the Earth" goes downhill from there. As soon as they discover the center of the Earth the script gets worse and worse and worse, with only the surprisingly rare action scene, utilizing 3D quite well, providing any sort of entertainment. The acting gets worse, the direction is stiff, the special effects are mostly quite unimpressive, and worst of all it starts to get incredibly, incredibly tedious. The exteriors of the expedition's beginning and exit through craters were taken at the Lanzarote volcano in the Canary Islands, providing a barren, other-worldly appearance that almost resembles a moonscape. Although the reddish plains scarcely resembled Iceland, a series of extreme dramatic zooms impressively isolates the cast amidst the desolate location, providing a more dynamic lead-up to the descent than in the 1959 movie. The plunge into the Earth was shot a half-mile inside caves near Madrid, with the lighting effectively dark and claustrophobic. Not a very meaningful movie but still fun to watch, especially because the three main actors are very likable.And I was not disappointed at all. This was one of those rare movies that was almost exactly as I remembered it. Okay, so my 9-year-old brain didn't entirely register that most of it was dubbed or that most of the special effects weren't so special - but the things that made it memorable for me were exactly as I remembered them all those years ago. Brendan Fraser is a scientist who's brother went missing eleven years ago searching for the fabled land underneath that Verne talks about in his novel. He and Anita Briem's father were Vernists, apparently folks out there who believe that what Verne wrote about has some basis in fact. An animated television series, Journey to the Center of the Earth, first broadcast in 1967 on ABC, starring the voices of Ted Knight, Pat Harrington, Jr., and Jane Webb; loosely based on Verne's novel and closer to the 1959 film. [4] Norihiko Kurazono's Chitei Ryokou (地底旅行) is a manga adaptation of Journey to the Center of the Earth that was serialized in Comic Beam from 2015 to 2017. Creature Feature found the movie to be sluggish and boring, giving it two out of five stars. It found the movie did improve when the dinosaurs finally appeared, but that the effects were weak.
