If you are looking to do some artwork, but not necessarily an artist, you want to use the B-type pencils because they do not smudge and they manage the lines well, helping define them in the portrait. Which pencils are darker? Hexagonal or triangular barrel shape: Hexagonal pencils (or semi-hex, which have slightly rounded corners) are fairly ubiquitous, and they’re great for everyday use because they allow you to get a firm grip and don’t roll off an inclined desk as easily as a round pencil.
