About this deal

You will see other names used from time to time but they are basically marketing terms for these same finishes. You only need to seal and protect what you put ON the surface of your polymer clay project. When you apply mica powders, chalks, glitter, or metal leaf to the surface of your polymer clay project, it will need to be protected if the item is subject to wear. Note thatlight dustings of chalk or mica, such as rosy cheeks on a sculpture, do not need to be sealed. The same holds true for dots of paint and antiquing in the recessed areas of a design. Varnish and acrylic paint are both solid options for indoor or outdoor display, though they are more of a middle-ground when it comes to sealants. Another source of this type of brush-on resin is sold by Teresa Salgado in her Tiny Pandora shop. Teresa calls this Deep Shine. This is a UV cure resin that’s thin enough to brush on with a brush. Troubles with Resin Inspect again with the magnifying glasses. Look for any bubbles that are lodged down in crevices or textures. Use a needle tool to encourage them to surface.

A better use for varnish is to seal surface effects such as mica, pastels, or complex color treatments. In this case, the varnish protects the stuff that’s ON the clay. Varnish is also your best choice when you want a textured surface to have a glossy or shiny finish. Now, start heating your oven. Be sure that it is set on bake, not broil, and the thermostat is no higher than 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93 Celsius). Again, we can not overstress the importance of not exceeding these temperature settings. Doing so can result in personal injury, damage to your home, and the loss of your work. Rather than buying this in kit form, where the colours and styles are created for you, all parts are sold separately giving you the opportunity to combine the colour of your crystals with any colour clay and to set them into any blank you can get your hands on. The design opportunities are endless. Best for: Deepening and enriching dark colors, giving a warm sheen to smooth clay. Liquid Polymer Clay We love Krylon Crystal Clear because of its ease of application and the fact it is more water-resistant and resists clouding better than most other acrylic varnishes.

If you’re looking for a sealant to use for an indoor piece of pottery, however, white glue or Mod Podge will be just fine. There’s no need for the high level of protection that outdoor pottery requires. Keeping that in mind, if you want your clay waterproof, colored other than its natural color or with a specific finish you will want to apply a sealant or varnish to it. What can I use to make my air dry clay shiny? The best part of acrylic paints as a water-resistant seal is that you get to add decoration and color to your artwork. Any baked clay can be sanded and buffed to make it shiny. This process can’t be used on surface treatments because it will sand them off. This process leaves a warm, burnished, pleasing feel to the clay’s surface that is a sensory delight. You can buffy a texture to create a warm, burnished appearance. Since there are no coatings or products on the clay’s surface, you can rebake it.

Epoxy clays can release toxic vapors when heated. While most people don’t think of these clays when discussing air-dry clay, they do fall in that category, so they need to be mentioned. So, how can you make air dry clay waterproof? While air dry clay can’t be completely waterproof, you can make it water-resistant by applying 1-3 coats of varnish, acrylic or water-based paint, Mod Podge, or liquid epoxy resin to the final product. However, these materials are not food-safe. Now that we’ve discussed a little bit about the natural state of air-dry clay and warned you against using it as a material to serve food with, let’s get into the methods for making air-dry clay water-resistant. 1. Let’s review the different options for sealing your air dry clay to give you the right level of water resistance for your decorative pottery. Types Of Sealants For Making Air Dry Clay Water-Resistant Air-dry clay is not food safe and it should be used for decorative purposes only. There are some sealants available for air-dry clay pots that are food-safe, but even if these are applied we would not recommend using air-dry clay for eating or drinking. Can you wet air-dry clay while sculpting? Apply your varnish according to the label directions. Make sure that as you paint or spray the varnish onto your pottery, you’re reaching all the crevices, divots, and corners that may exist in your piece. Resin has a bit of a learning curve, and many people prefer not to use it because it can trigger intense allergies. It eventually will turn yellow. While it’s usually easy to remove bubbles that rise to the surface, it’s not uncommon for more bubbles or odd swirls to form during curing. Once coated with resin, you cannot rebake your pieces.

Liquid Fusion is a urethane glue that is slightly amber-colored and crystal clear. It can be poured onthe surface of flat polymer clay and left to dry. It will take several days, but you’ll be left with a smooth, glossy, hard finish similar to resin. Sanding and Buffing Resin contracts as it cures, often pulling the resin away from the edges of your polymer clay pieces. Both UV and epoxy resin have a short shelf life, so buying in bulk isn’t always wise. Frankly, there are poorly performing resins out there, and you won’t know they don’t work well until you have ruined your pieces. No, you do not have to seal air-dry clay before you paint it. Most paints, including acrylic paint, will adhere to air-dry clay as long as it is properly cured before being painted. Many sealants will even allow you to apply paints in between layers of sealants. This makes it possible to create some truly unique and stunning effects. Does acrylic paint seal air dry clay? Acrylic paint will seal air dry clay but only to a certain extent. Most acrylic paint is water-resistant but will not make your air-dry clay pots waterproof. Unlike polymer clay, air dry clay is water-soluble. To be made waterproof it has to be completely coated with a waterproof coating like epoxy or polyurethane. Most Acrylic paints, including outdoor acrylics, are water-resistant not waterproof. Will Air-Dry Clay dissolve in water?

Correct any flaws that you find now. It will be much more difficult to take corrective action later. As stated, you will need nothing to bake the clay that you probably don’t already have in your home. Both doming and coating resins contract during the curing process and some brands are worse than others at giving poor coating coverage. If you’re frustrated with one brand, try another. Also be aware that some brands of polymer clay will be better at “grabbing” the resin than others. Doming resin can also cause thin polymer clay pieces to curl upward. These Holo Effect cutter ornaments were coated with the Chinese UV resin mentioned above. The strong contracting effect cause the thin polymer clay to curve upward. Coating vs. Casting Resin
