Earplugs need to be comfortable. The last thing you want is for the product to be causing you pain. If you lose one plug or if the leash becomes worn, you don’t need to buy a pair and can just buy a single replacement.

SurfEars have close to zero acoustic loss in the frequency range of human speech while the best competitor cuts away about 20-30dB. To give you a reference, 30dB is roughly the difference between the loudest and lowest volume setting on your smartphone. That’s pretty big difference! So, if like me you have been suffering from ear issues or simply want to avoid them, I thoroughly recommend you consider some earplugs for whenever you are surfing or doing activities in the sea. This is especially important when the sea is colder than around 20 °C or you’re exposed to wind – i.e. pretty much all of the time in the UK – but it is good practice to use them all the time.Surf earplugs are a super important part of the kit these days. They’re there to prevent surfer’s ear, a phenomenon that sees the gradual expansion of the inner ear muscles and bones after excessive and regular exposure to cold air and H2O. It’s not a good thing. Victims can lose up to 90% of hearing. And the treatment is a drill taken down the ear canal. Ouch!
I realise there are cheaper earplug alternatives on the market but SurfEars 3.0 earplugs are leading the industry in terms of performance and build quality.
The silicone tips have been redesigned to achieve a better seal while also increasing wearing comfort. They are thinner, softer and conforms to the shape of the ear more easily Mouldable plugs are often advised as a cheap, simple, disposable option and so I tried using these first, also being an occasional pool swimmer in the winter months. Whilst these are obviously comfortable as they squish to your ear shape, and form a waterproof and windproof seal in your ear easily, they are not suitable for anything other than pool swimming. We’ve seen complaints that the earplugs are very uncomfortable and that they can’t hear much when they are wearing them. From our experience they are comfortable but they do deaden the sound a bit.
