About this deal

The height of these baths can be adjusted, either mechanically or electrically. This is designed to reduce the need for a carer to bend over the bath if you require assistance. The Myco Adjustable Width Swivel Bather® has two parts; a base frame that rests on the bath and a seat unit that rotates on the base. The two parts separate easily for handling and storage. Each part weighs 3.2kg. The Swivel Bather is adjustable from 26″ to 30″ to fit a range of domestic baths. An over bath shower is often not fitted by local authorities. The reason for this is that you would still need to access the bath to use the shower, and equipment can be provided for this rather than fitting a shower. However, an over bath shower is sometimes fitted. This could be because the bath is too short to take equipment and a person. Or the client is very tall, and could not fit into a standard bath with the equipment as well. Or if a person has severe epilepsy and is at risk of having a seizure in the bath, an over bath shower would be considered to reduce the risk of having a seizure in a bath full of water. You may be able to step into the bath at its lowest level and then be raised to a convenient height. However, remember that the water usually needs to drain away before you can get out. These baths are not often used in a domestic setting. We do NOT decide if an item is or isn’t exempt & we don’t make any more or less money if we charge you VAT or we don’t charge you VAT.

Bath boards may sometimes also be called shower boards. Shower boards have greater width/depth than bath boards providing a greater area of support whilst sitting under a shower, whereas bath boards are narrower to provide more room if you wish to transfer down onto a bath seat. Bath boards can be used to sit on whilst showering. A rail can be fixed horizontally to the wall 75-100mm above the bath rim (see dimension c in diagram). It should start 200mm from the tap end of the bath (dimension a). These use a rechargeable battery to power the lifting motor. The battery must be recharged regularly. Some have a safety system which will not allow the seat to lower to the bottom of the bath if there is not enough remaining battery power to raise the seat fully to the top again. Some have an emergency stop mechanism.

Some boards are designed with integral handgrips which may be useful when moving onto and off the board. Some boards have a cut-away section or a dip at the front to make personal cleaning easier. There are several options that can be considered to enable a person to access bathing facilities safely. If you access OT services through the NHS or Social care, they will look at the most cost effective solution to meet your bathing needs. This will begin with looking at the bathroom. If you have a standard bath with an over bath shower, you will likely be required to trial a bath board or swivel bather which give you safe access into the bath by sitting on them and swinging legs over. You would then stay sitting on it to use your over bath shower. Grab rails can also be fitted to the wall. In many areas a range of simple aids to daily living may be available on a prescription, issued by the assessor. If you receive a prescription for equipment you can take it to a local accredited retailer, which may be a local pharmacy, who will provide you with the item. You can pay extra for an alternative item, so long as it does what the specific item prescribed would do. Your choice may offer extra features, or perhaps you prefer its appearance. Bath hoists fully support you as the user as they mechanically lift/lower you in/out of the bath. They will usually require the assistance of a carer. Please be aware that there are certain legal health and safety requirements regarding the use of hoists, especially if you employ a private carer. For more information see our factsheet on Selecting a hoist and slings for lifting a person. Baths are available which incorporate an integral swivel seat that lifts you up, over and down into the bath. The seat may include a leg raising mechanism to lift your feet over the bath rim. Most have a moulded seat, limiting your ability to recline.

Bath steps provide a step-like platform on the outside of the bath, lessening the height you need to lift your legs to get into the bath. The adjustable width Swivel Bather can be easily adjusted to fit a wide range of bathtubs. Each arm of the base frame can be independently adjusted by simply turning the grey handles. The adjustable width allows the seat to be set closer to the open side of the bath, making transfers in and out of the bathtub easier. The mechanism is also built with non-slip rubber ends on the base for additional stability and support. Turning Seat Improves Bathtub Safety Important Note: It does NOT include a frail elderly person who is otherwise able-bodied or any person who is only temporarily disabled or incapacitated, such as with a broken limb. The Swivel Bather® fits on any standard bath, no fixtures or fittings are required and the unit is easily removed when not required.

You will need to ensure that your bath is strong enough, of the right dimensions, and safe for the installation of bathing equipment. When stood in the bath: A rail (at least 500mm long) can be fixed vertically on the wall, 600mm from the tap end of the bath (dimension b in above diagram), with its lower end 200mm above the bath rim. This is most likely to be of use when stood in the bath (perhaps whilst showering) or when standing up from a bath board.

There are long handled washing and personal care equipment and hand and foot care aids available, designed to help make it easier to reach parts of your body when washing with less stretching or bending. The Myco Heavy Duty Swivel Bather has two parts; a base frame that rests on the bath and a seat unit that rotates on the base. The two parts separate easily for handling and storage. Each part weighs 3.2kg. The frame of the Heavy Duty Adjustable Width Swivel Bather is made from Stainless Steel for additional strength and is weight rated to 160kg (25 st). The unit is adjustable in width from 26″ to 30″, so that it fits a range of domestic baths. The board may be perforated or slatted, so that water drains away easily, and can be made of different materials, such as solid or padded plastic, wood, metal or cork. In general, padded boards or seats will provide greater comfort and feel less cold. The hoisting mechanism may be manual or electronically powered, controlled with a remote handset. Manual hoists are operated by a winding handle designed to be operated by a carer. Powered hoists most often use a rechargeable battery which will need charging regularly. You operate the controls independently via a handset.
